So What? As long as his content is living up to the hype, I have no problem. I actually regret people who have so much to give and add value, do not promote themselves so much and morons and fillers take up the space.

At least for me, the dude is insightful and his long form articles about tactics are worth his "self-promotion".

sort by: page size:

I enjoy his content and I have found some of his explanations novel and enlightening.

I don't know why him spending untold hours producing detailed content is a bad thing. Even if it is for self-promotion.

Does it bother anybody that he is promoting his own article by posting it? I have seen this and many other comments by this user as what seems like a funnel to book time with him and eventually be a paying customer. I am not sure how I feel about this.

I disagree. I've taken the time to read all his blog posts, each one. I've found that level of value from his blog. What he does that's beyond most bloggers out there - he freely shares how he's screwed up, what's he's learned and is learning. The guy is smart! It's refreshing and I've learned a lot from reading his blog.

I mean, it's at least reasonably good content, versus him spamming backlinks into random Disqus feeds.

If the article was good, I don't mind. Now, if he continues to only post links to his stuff, that's another story.

I mean...me too! But IMO that's not quite the case. I think the argument is the best, most insightful pieces are going to get the most traffic.

But still, I'm still pretty happy about the subscription. He's better than most bloggers out there.

good at self-promotion. he practices what he preaches.

Yeah, like this isn't really how most people feel, he's really just pleasing an audience for views, page hits, and viewership growth.

I’ve always respected his work. But I don’t subscribe to blogs, just see it pop up on HN frequently. I didn’t realize he was monetizing it. I’m surprised he’s doing so well with tbh but good for him.

First page in HN, I bet he is going to get a few more users.

This "I feel guilty but they are making money" narrative thing is just genius marketing. I take my hat off to him.

No, he drives some people crazy, and I personally think he'd be twice as good if he posted half as much, but he clearly knows a lot about a lot of things.

Try this endorsement for example: http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2011/11/sum...

I disagree with this.

How many journalists do you know who would look at a successful blog like iCanHazCheeseburger and say: "I should raise some money from friends and family, buy that blog, and then build a media empire out of similar blogs that I buy up."

If he says he doesn't know why his blogs are successful, it'd because he knows his former colleagues eat that stuff up during interviews and it makes for a funny story.

While luck undoubtedly played a part in his success so far, he was thinking about things entrepreneurially unlike most journalists who are just looking for the next paycheck.

Also, the fact that traffic across his sites has grown since he bought them shows he's a smart manager of his properties.

I'm ok with him promoting his work, not sure why that's bad for you. It's a great resource for learning.

He probably would have made as much money even if he didn't blog about himself.

I don't know, the attention is also advertisement for himself. And HNs front page is pretty good. People say his code base is not bad, so if I would need contracting in the field right now, I would check this guy out.

I'm not a TF fan but he does have the occasional piece of "unhype-y" brilliance, such as this video on how to build a high traffic blog: http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2009/06/29/how-to-build...

His analysis is hit or miss. Hard to avoid that outcome when you are under pressure to produce a prolific amount of content in a regular basis

He writes for hackers, not for Nature, his articles take a week, not a year. People like to read his perspective and he's got some street cred. Why does it bother you so much if he has a following? So do sportspeople, businesspeople, graffiti artists. That's ok. It takes very little from your life. Personally I'm glad he takes the time.

If you can do better, go for it.

Yes, he's been on a pretty consistent self-promotion tour with the blog and the twitter.
