I’ve always respected his work. But I don’t subscribe to blogs, just see it pop up on HN frequently. I didn’t realize he was monetizing it. I’m surprised he’s doing so well with tbh but good for him.

sort by: page size:

He makes a living from his blog. Of course he is marketing something. He is very proud of it and he mentions it often. He is not hiding it.

Is this your first encounter with his blog?

I'm assuming that he is not making a living solely based on his blogging. It's seems like a side gig, to be honest

Some of the stuff he writes is hard to explain with facts, and I started to wonder if there's some sort of financial incentive.

Or are you saying the popularity of his blog is enough financial incentive?

I don't think he is that underrated? His blogs often get quite high on HN

Or since making millions off his blog

I mean...me too! But IMO that's not quite the case. I think the argument is the best, most insightful pieces are going to get the most traffic.

But still, I'm still pretty happy about the subscription. He's better than most bloggers out there.

> After already making millions off of his past career

Having a popular blog is that much appreciated nowadays that he'd have significantly more income than his peers (without blogs)?

I initially read one of his articles through a post here. I've since started supporting him through Patreon. Great stuff.

Interesting. I didn't know he outsourced his blog posts. Can you give me the link for that?

i've read his stuff for years. He puts his best articles in the weekly update, which is free.

It generates the most views and clicks. His other 3 articles per week is...not bad but certainly not as good and meaty as weekly updates.

Paying for it is on some livel similar to patreon sub.

Blog + newsletter. He has a fairly large following so the vast majority of that cost is likely from the newsletter.

been a fan of shoemoney for a while - interesting to see the kind of traffic his blog is driving

Maybe so, although he has been featuring other authors on his blog regularly now. He works with them to keep the quality high, check them out.

First page in HN, I bet he is going to get a few more users.

This "I feel guilty but they are making money" narrative thing is just genius marketing. I take my hat off to him.

He does extremely well. He has a very high page view site and is excellent at monetizing.

Why wouldn't it be? He's just using it as a blog.

I like how he subtly puts his biz in the blog. Smooth.

it was almost certainly after he was famous and i have no idea how successful his blog is. but he seems to think it's been great for him according to last interview i heard him on Tim Ferriss

as another example Casey Neistad said that his vlog took off after he decided to produce content daily.

He probably would have made as much money even if he didn't blog about himself.
