They did drop maoism. China practices state run capitalism now.

China abandoned communism with Deng Xiaoping's reforms. They are fiercely capitalist, with strong authoritarian political structure.

Not directly, but the more the people can be led to believe that the current state of wealth is due to the glorious policies of their benevolent leaders, the better. This column serves that purpose nicely.


I'm not sure I'd call China far left, autocratic certainly but they have embraced capitalism.
