You can also use an external keyboard to have a hardware escape key too.

That's not the point.

Some keyboards, like "hacker keyboard" (f-droid) have an escape key.

Is the whole escape key thing a joke that I'm not in on? Why don't you just use the part of the touchbar that is exactly the same as an escape key all the way down to saying "esc"? I don't get it man.

What’s your usecase for it? My work laptop has one and I use it to change the brightness of my screen and to lock it. That’s it. I really miss the physical escape key, especially when using vim...

non-Intel 16" Pros do, too. Escape key was added back in Nov 2019.

That's fine but you can still do that without the physical key, can't you? I'm still able to escape out of dialogs like that without needing a physical key.

I use Escape because it is in exactly the same place on almost all PC and Mac keyboards. Yeah, I know that Escape is not a proper modifier key.

? There is no escape key?

Escape key is non negotiable. Sorry, you won't change my mind on that point.

What do you mean ‘no escape key’?

All the terminals I have used swap out the suggestions bar for a row of extra keys, with escape in the place you would expect it.

Not even a developer key: `escape` is a very convenient UI mechanism for getting out of something modal or otherwise overlayed and open.

He's talking about keypresses coming from a physical usb device - just one that doesn't have physical keys on it.

Fun fact : I have an external keyboard, but it's an MS one, so there is no more drivers, and some keys just won't work (or at least I haven't yet found anyway to remap things.)

Shrug, I guess ?

Hint, folks. The post is not about keyboards. It's not about typing or any other form of text entry, either.

My laptop doesn't have an End key.

Trips me up every time I am without a decent keyboard (to be fair: I mostly use it docked).

Fucking duh.

It's not quite as bad as it looks, I've only accidentally opened man pages and siri a couple of times but I've also never once used it and thought "wow this is so much better than having a row of function keys" so it's been all negatives.

My personal keyboard doesn't have an escape key either, you can just use the alt key or c-[ most of the time so that wasn't as big a deal as everyone made it out to be.

Funny. But there is still an escape key and it's not altogether impossible to use

Sure, but that's what the keys are supposed to be for.

Needs an escape key on the keeb

I feel like I can boil this post down to:

1. There's no escape key! 2. It has roughly the same specs as existing MBPs

ergo now totally useless for developers

Anyone sw developer that cares about the escape key remapped it to the caps lock key years ago
