Does gmail really not work in another browser like Firefox? Seriously? How is this possible?

sort by: page size:

You've obviously never tried GMail in Firefox, though that's probably intentional.

Fwiw, I use Gmail exclusively in Firefox and have no problems at all. (And my machines are fairly dated.)

So how does Gmail do it with other browsers?

On top of that, it will only work well in Gmail on Chrome. Gmail on Firefox is already kind of a shitty experience, it will only get worse.

Gmail is working for me in FireFox. In Chrome, it is still crashing.

Routinely have similar issues with gmail/chrome whereas I never have any issues on Firefox. Odd.

Admittedly I only use the gmail web client for viewing email and not much else, but I have never had issues with gmail on firefox. What problems are you experiencing?

Gmail is pretty slow in Firefox no matter what.

I don't why people bother with claims like these are are trivially disproven. Anybody reading this can open up Firefox and go to Gmail and see for themselves that it works perfectly well (FF 73, Gmail frontend gmail_fe_200213.13_p5). So whatever your problem is with gmail is either imaginary or caused by some other software you've inflicted on yourself.

Firefox, Edge, Safari, pretty much all non-chromium browsers are compatible with gmail.

This is the crux of the issue.

Gmail itself is unusable on Android + Firefox. When using an alternative browser you'll also stumble in problems with plenty of Android apps: Slack, Citymapper, etc... (when opening a web page intent, they expect that the only app that'll receive that will be Chrome)

The situation isn't as bad for desktop browsers, but it's depressing how things can still be broken.

I've been using GMail since 2004 and I'm not having any trouble, even in Firefox.

Is there a reason browser-based doesn't work for you? I moved to gmail only a few years ago and haven't looked back.

What does email have to do with switching browsers? Last I heard Gmail also works on Firefox.

Gmail works awful on Firefox (slow, heavy memory usage, etc).

Some things are fixed in the last releases of FF, but according of what I read recently, Google is doing this on purpose.

Any addon or userscript recommended?

Huh? I've been using Firefox almost exclusively for five years and have been a gmail user the entire time.

I used to get the gmail message all the time with firefox on linux. My solution was to use chromium for gmail and firefox for the rest.

Google uses non-standard extensions that only Chrome supports for Gmail and Youtube.

For neutral email apps, Firefox runs perfectly fine. For Gmail, it will be slightly slower than Chrome.

I wonder if this is why I've been having weird stalls and intermittent failures using GMail the last few weeks. Every time, I try it in Firefox or Safari and it works perfectly.
