I have read the linked article. There is a root cause that is deeper than "just very bad CSS".

I agree that something is wrong with CSS. When you have to resort to hacks when making columns and vertically centering things... you know something is wrong.

gah, they hard-coded styling. I tried to get rid of the awful, readability-hurting css in firebug but that did little.

The CSS on this site is not done very well. There's a noticeable white flash while the page loads 73 CSS files. Kind of surprising because the site looks quite professional apart from that.
