Not necessarily. Low tiers of Hulu still have commercials.

sort by: page size:

Well, depends - the lowest tier of Hulu has ads. Nothing's stopping anyone from being greedy and introducing ads anyways.

I haven't used Hulu since they phased out the free tier, but I see in the article that Hulu generates $1bn in advertising sales per year. Do you still have to watch ads on the paid tiers?

Apparently, that exists. From the article:

> Hulu will still have advertising. The two current paid tiers — $7.99 a month with some ads and completely ad-free at $11.99 a month — are going to remain.

I can't remember the last time I saw something with a commercial on Hulu.

Hulu without commercials doesn’t have commercials in the middle of content.

They might introduce a cheaper tier with ads, like Hulu does.

The commercials is the reason I've never bothered with a Hulu sub. I pay on iTunes and Netflix so I don't have to deal with those.

Hulu does have an ad free tier now just in case you weren’t aware.

Hulu shows commercials even if you pay.

I'm sure Netflix will start once revenue starts slipping.

I mean, also Showtime, Starz, Cinemax...

To say nothing of the fact that Hulu has maintained an "ad" and "ad-free" tier for their original programming.

IIRC, the licensing arrangement between Hulu and the network prohibits not showing ads on those shows, or some such nonsense.

Even with the upcharge there are simply less commercials on hulu, not zero. So says their FAQ - https://help.hulu.com/s/article/included-in-no-commercials-p...

A small number of shows are not included in our No Commercials Add-on. You can still watch these shows, however, they will play with a short commercial before and after each episode.

While the list of shows may change, they are currently: Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Scandal, Grimm, New Girl, and How To Get Away With Murder.

And then on top of that it's a wasteland content-wise as you stated.

I thought Hulu still had ads even if you pay. That's a non-starter.

This page:

  http://www.hulu.com/help/articles/52427902
says some shows still have commercials:

Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Scandal, Grimm, New Girl and How To Get Away With Murder

It also says shows available for next-day viewing will still have commercials.

> no commercials

Anyone who watches Hulu has heard "will play with a commercial before and after the show". Hulu has been increasing the number of ads they include. It used to be ad free for many shows. Then they went to 30 second ads. Now they're stuffing 180 seconds or more on many shows.

> higher quality (arguably) shows

Definitely arguable. My feeling is the quality is going down quite a bit, but I think that's because the demand for content volume has increased (in the era of binge watching, a single TV series is started and over in one weekend).

> Additionally, it’s possible to just subscribe to the one service you really like because they all have a lot of content.

This might be true now. But there are multiple high profile streaming services launching in the next year (e.g. Disney+), which is prompting Disney to pull all content off other platforms.

> Hulu shows commercials even if you pay.

Hulu has literally half a dozen old shows that they are contractually required to show an ad in front of or take down entirely. The vast, vast majority of users on the service will never see one.

It's a very different scenario to a company actively looking to increase advertising.

It changed. There's an ad-free option on Hulu now.

Hulu does that AND still sticks commercials in, paid or not!

Hulu has had an ad-free option for most of it's life, although I think for a handful of videos the rights situation still required them to still show at least one ad for a movie or episode of a show
