What is the redacted company that might own Proton?

sort by: page size:

We have always had control over the Proton brands. Proton has just two outside investors, FONGIT and CRV, and neither has anywhere near a controlling interest. We do take your concerns seriously though, and will aim for even more transparency.

There is an About Us link towards the bottom of the page, and the company name Proton AG is spelled out in the article as well as at the bottom of the page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proton_AG

They look intentionally secretive.

It appears to be people from the former Halcyon Molecular, so basically part of the Musk/Nosek/Thiel and Founders Fund insider crowd.

this was really shady business imho, especially that this "announcement" by the original author was made AFTER the ownership transfer had already taken place. there's a big discussion on the original project's GitHub page for anyone who's interested https://github.com/ParticleCore/Particle/issues/528

i guess it's about recent exchange of their news service to vk. not literaly sold to the government

It's a publicly traded company.

It's a public company.

It's a public company.

I imagine that the company will remain privately held and will be controlled by the Wolfram Foundation or something like that.

they are incorporated now. Trust them as much as you trust Samsung or Google. Or maybe less.

They are a public company now.

It's possible their company was acquired.

Did anyone guess the name of this mysterious company ? Given that they're worth 4 billion today, I think they could be well known to some HN members.

Also, the part about "getting their technology written into legislation" aka regulatory capture aka monopoly ? Sounds completely legit guys !

It's privately held, so the information on who owns it isn't public. Mike Harrington was a co-founder, he may still have some stake in the company.

From that link:

> My company acquired SourceForge

It's interesting how often you mention they were acquired by someone else but not by whom. It cannot be a secret, but you don't seem to want the parent company known either.

I just spent an hour going down the rabbit hole. Every time I click the "owned by" link, another "owned by" reference appears.

It's not really owned by one company is it?

I think they have stated quite publicly and explicitly: The company is for sale.

From 2014 to Feb 2019 (during which I think a lot of the hacking occurred) it was 100% owned by the American company Francisco Partners.

I emailed their support and they said they've been acquired by another company but can't disclose the details.
