Seconded, I'm in the same boat. I realize attempting to wipe my data from all the various sources it may be in across the web is futile but I'd still like to try.

sort by: page size:

to what my dude? is this data still accessible or is it being systematically wiped?

I sure hope someone has a plan to at least preserve all this data, if not to look at it. Does anyone know?

You think you're going to get discovery to even prove this? Plausible deniability and even just ignorance will likely cause you to get nowhere with wiping this collected data.

If it's wiped then there's no data for them to get?

I wish they'd hand the data off to some group that actually would do something with it, like the internet archive.

Thanks for sharing that link. I couldn't find that talk last time the question of emergency data destruction came up.

I wonder if ArchiveTeam can even begin to rescue the amount of data that's about to disappear.

If you want something removed from the Archive, now is the time to make your request.

Who knows what hands the data will end up in after they're gone.

Yes, that's a real problem. I'd wager that many companies have no idea whatsoever where all the copies of your data have gone.

It'd be difficult and expensive. There's also a good chance you'd meaa up and destroy the data.

Same thing at my uni..we have peta bytes of data saved..it's going to be impossible to get it off in time.

Many things have vanished without a trace from the internet, but it is essentially impossible to ever be sure that nobody has backed up a bit of data.

I'm not optimistic at all, but there is little else I can do. Best case scenario I can prevent the further spread of my data while it bit rots and becomes less useful. I will join the class action that is sure to come out of this, too.

Unfortunately, this is how I feel at this point too... Though I might be special here, as the group that dumped my data was the US Government, and the data they dumped is ALL of the important stuff, including a photocopy of my DD-214...

Makes me a little sad to think of it gradually succumbing to bit rot, even though I know everything does and I don't mind that some of my own data is going the same way. If you want to preserve it I bet it wouldn't be too hard to rustle up volunteers to try to retrieve and transfer it.

It seems to me like you don’t own this data. If you want to preserve this data, try again with the owner?

Is there away to prove the data is actually deleted? It's not really gone forever is it, just removed from the search index. Other copies will have been made by various agencies. I suppose for most purposes thats ok, but not all.

That's really dangerous. What will you do if data is gone?

I archived it to cloud storage because I've decided that this raw data has no utility except to waste my time.
