Ah, I thought you can only apply after 5 years and show that you were physically present for 3 years. But I guess not.

Not clear to me why the requirements should differ if you have been doing 5 years vs. 3.

Call me ignorant but didn't they change it so that you would not be able to do that anymore and instead were given a max of around 20 years from the start of the application process?

It’s 3 years but applications are taking 12 months to process so 4 years total.

This is already built into the requirement: 3 to 7 years.

After three years he/she is open to apply for what might take others 7.

You don't have to wait 5 years, you can request them yearly. They just go back 5 years (I think).

Oh good idea! (see my other reply), unfortunately 3.5 years seems to still be disallowed, that's why the submitter had to add '?' to the url.

I wrote that you have to be able to wait 5 years.

Greater than 3 Years but less than equal to 5 Years

you mean they become eligible only after 3 months?

I believe you’re supposed to keep applications on file for a year.

Ah I see, it doesn’t look like there’s a 3 year option anymore. Thanks for the info!

It probably just means that for the next 3 years you don't have to re-apply every time you visit, but doesn't change anything about how long you're allowed to stay.

Thanks for the info, that's pretty interesting. Are you ever allowed to go back and do another 2 years?

The 10 year standard counts as well, if I remember correctly.

Basically only deferral or taking the extended 30 year plan don't count.

The rollover of the license is 3 years, not 5 years.

20 years on top of the application date, as far as my Googling returns. Seems like a fairly standard term.

That's the point! But yes the 5 year timeframe is somewhat arbitrary and may need to be adjusted.

Some stuff (TL; DR) from the linked DoD fact sheet:

- The applicant must have been in valid, legal status, for the last 2 years (no need to have been in the same status during those 2 years);

- Must not have had any single absence from the US longer than 90 days during those two years;

- Must commit to at least 4 years of Active Duty service.

True, but that's up to 5 years (and in the worst case at least 90 days, if you submit for renewal as early as possible) rather than 60 days.
