Lol - I found a wikihow page to answer your question. :-D

how about using an actual operating system? :P

Just build my own operating system, ok.

Just don't make something so complicated just to boot an OS. The damn thing is an operating system on its own now.

It is wildly impractical to not have an OS and have to manually program your computer every time you boot it. But don't you want to try it?

Just use a base OS that has what you need? :D

This is quite helpful, thanks. What would prompt someone to go this way, I wonder? There are some pretty minimal OS options out there these days.

Cool stuff.

Actually did something similar back in 2000. We built a dual-processor Pentium II machine and installed Win2k and Redhat (IIRC), then with vmware and a bit of hacking we were able to make each one VM bootable inside the other. Just for the sake of it really. Fun :)

Interesting. How do you modify and rebuild the OS?

Build a PC and install Linux on it and be done with it.

That does start to sound attractive. I'd rather not have to hack anything just to install an OS, though. It'll probably be bad enough learning UEFI.

If you have the choice to install "Linux", you have the choice to build your own operating system and install that instead.

But then you would have to install your OS yourself! The horror!

Add elementary OS to it and you're set :)

Install Linux on it. That's want Linus did to his.

Try the DIY edition, which comes without an OS:

You can choose "bring your own / no OS" option when you build your own.

DIY PC is the way to go. you can load up Linux or Windows.

No OS, it’s too slow. The binary needs to bootstrap the machine as well.

Installing a OS free of patent-lawsuits and bad digital karma on your otherwise good hardware:
