Lying to people for your benefit only to later defend yourself with "it was just a joke!" after they take you seriously isn't jesting; it's plain assholery.
Is that the "I was just joking" defense? I suppose that's good enough for government work, but I'll warn you not to try it here because the mods aren't big fans... ask me how I know lol.
Well, of course he does. He'd be stupid not to. But it's very easy to say "ONLY JOKING" whenever you get called on your offensive bullshit that you originally intended.
That’s the problem with making jokes like that in such a position. It makes you seem like a piece of trash, even if you aren’t.
But, they can assume he is all that as much as you can assume he was joking and isn’t a bad person. You can’t prove your side, it’s merely an interpretation given your own biases. Just like people who call him narcissistic or a sadist are basing that on theirs.
Really? I can excuse just about anything if it's really a joke. I would so not want to be held accountable for the literal meaning of my friends' and my typical banter.
The current issue aside, racists and xenophobes basically always attempt to evade responsibility by claiming they were "only joking". Such claims should be tossed in the trash bin where they belong. First, it's not a joke, and it's not funny. Second, they're lying...they didn't intend it as a "joke" and don't really even understand what a "joke" actually is, for the most part. And third, it's not relevant whether it was a joke or not.
"It was just a joke" is a common distraction technique used by neonazis and other social conservatives. When seen it is safe to presume bad faith until proven otherwise.
