Laptops do not have absurd cost now. There are good options from 300$ upto 2000$+

sort by: page size:

Prices for laptops and desktops are way down. Best Buy is selling a core i5, 256 SSD, 8 GB ram Dell laptop for $399 as of this writing. That's plenty of power for most used.

Where prices continue to be high is for business laptops, where people will pay a lot more money for a little bit more performance (and better build quality, lighter weight).

I remember a time when a half decent laptop was $1500.

Also, have you seen high-end laptop prices? Dell XPS is easily 3k+$.

That's what a good laptop costs (also what people are willing to pay). They're more than reasonable for the performance you get out of it.

I'm surprised the price hasn't increased frankly.

Strawman. Most mid-range ($700-1200) PC laptops are just fine nowadays.

All the laptops I've bought have been $1-2k. It's not really that much, sub $1k laptops are pretty shit.

> Introductory price: US $4,000 (equivalent to $9,443 in 2022)

It's wild how expensive laptops used to be

The best $2000 laptop is ten used Latitudes.

Laptops are cattle, not pets.

Disagree. The median laptop price is <$1k and it's not a fair comparison by any metric.

True, but laptops have a fixed price. They aren't worth $0 most of the time and $1B a tiny fraction of the time.

I can't see myself spending this much for a laptop but I guess there is a market for it.

Because some handwavy analogue to Moore's Law says that said laptop ought to cost about $400 now (and in fact it's hard to justify blowing $1k on a laptop). Have you priced something equivalent (compute-wise, screens are still expensive) lately?

Yea, I was surprised how expensive they were. It seems like there should be cheaper options given how little laptops cost these days and them using basically laptop hardware from what I've read.

A new laptop with equivalent specs is probably a $300 Chromebook.

That thing is 7+ years old.

Don't be silly.

Laptops today are much better than laptops of the past. Should they cost much more than in the past (beyond just inflation)?

The only problem recently is they keep running out of stock on the cheaper spec'd versions of laptops so everything was $1200+ when I last checked.

Especially laptops, their current pricing is absolutely crazy.

That is absolutely nutty. 400 for some gimmick?

You can get a decently specd laptop these days for $400.

But a laptop that's much more powerful is about $250 these days. That's why people are complaining.

(But, to be fair, capacitative touch screens and 3G modems are not cheap parts.)

Same here. My laptop cost $400 in 2016 and still serves my needs perfectly.
