The ID.4 could be considered to be an electric version of the VW Tiguan. It is similar in internal size and capacity and it targets the compact CUV customer but with electric drive train. It does use a newer platform. Even the styling is quite restrained and conservative compared to other EVs.
VW does a lot of joint ventures with competitors; the Ford Explorer EV is essentially an id.4, say.
I'd kind of wonder if VW is more interested in vans here, tho. They seem to have missed the boat on electric vans; it's all Merc/Citroen/Renault in Europe, and Rivian in the US. VW's only electric van is a cargo version of the id Buzz.
Apparently this is just EVs, props to VW. Looks like the ID.3 wasn't sold in the US which is why you may not have heard of it.
VW Group's top-selling EV in 2020 was the VW ID.3 with 56,500 deliveries, followed by the Audi E-Tron (47,300 deliveries) and VW e-Golf (41,300 deliveries). This year, VW Group will start sales of the VW ID.4, which will likely be a bigger hit than the ID.3 due to its SUV body style. The ID.4 will also be sold in the United States, unlike the ID.3.
There will also be an Audi version of the ID.4 this year, which will go by the name Q4 E-Tron, and Audi will also launch this year its own version of the Taycan, the E-Tron GT. Other VW Group brands also plan to launch various EVs this year.
VW has created a huge EV platform. You won't see it as much in the US but in Europe they'll probably unleash 40 models covering every category in the next 2-3 years.
Volkswagen is showing it now. They'll release multiple models across multiple brands every year from now on. Here are some upcoming EVs from Volkswagen. Some available now, some available soon, some available in future:
