They don’t have any power over the government or the average US voter. They only have power over random corporate employees and universities.

The individual citizen has practically no power against large institutional actors.

As evidenced in the 2016 US elections, their collective power is limited. It is not directly the power to control the military and police forces.

They have absolutely no say in the current system and are completely at the mercy of these centralized powers.

If they are not powerful, why can they shut down schools and the corporations they are a part of?

They do have the power. Just not the desire to use it in certain ways. This is where lobbyists come in.

Actually they don't have that authority. That's an abuse of their power.

Hope all you'd like but that doesn't change the fact that they'll do whatever they want because you have no power.

Nobody elected those people though. In a democracy, they shouldn't have that much power.

Most people don't have any influence. And that rules don't apply (or at least apply just selectively) to powerful people is no surprise either.

Yes the President of The United States of America is the ONLY person with ANY power. Not the companies who spend billions of dollars lobbying to pass laws only in their own interest. Not the media moguls or tv personalities who can manipulate public perception on any issue. Not the lawmakers, the community leaders, people who directly affect other people's lives.

No, I can't imagine anybody would like it if folks were dim and complacent and just generally easy to fuck over

Powerful people with no direct influence over their day to day. The Republican party and conservatives broadly defined aren't censoring comedy shows, picking up sitcom pilots, commissioning Netflix specials, etc.

The people nixing comedians' and other speakers' university events have real power, in contrast.

The people who really control things in the US aren't politicians. That is way beneath the scions of multi-generational wealth. Even T* isn't in their club.

The power resides in generational wealth not some commoners who got lucky. These people don't need to hold elected office because they can buy whatever they want, including manipulating government in their favor.

They have a lot of potential political power. They refuse to use it.

Do they try to get elected? why would you need to get elected when you can control any candidate, or control things regardless of who is in power???

They are very powerful in that almost no politician is willing to act against their interests. Please correct me if that impression is wrong.

Why do you think AOC has any actual power at all?

Exactly, we never voted any of the people making these decisions into office, they didn’t have to campaign or explain their policies to the public. Having a layer in between these regulators and the public (the politicians who appoint them) removes power from the common people.

I know that, and that doesn't exempt them from accusations of using their reach to actively manipulate the population to gain political power.
