I am curious, what are your complaints about the new SE? I have a 2016 SE and am going to upgrade to either the 2020 SE, 12 mini, or 12. The 2016 SE feels a bit small in my hand (I have large hands), but I worry the iPhone 12 regular size will be too large.
They are going to upgrade SE which will be the same size as the current SE 2020 as rumors suggest. And while Mini is smaller, SE still counts as a small phone.
I finally bit the bullet and upgraded from a SE, compromising on the size of the phone. I already notice increased wrist stress and place more sideways weight than is optimal on my pinky (to hold the phone up but also be able to reach single-handed).
So, knowing how life works, we can guarantee that Apple will release a small form factor phone as part of their next offering ;)
This SE, and the previous one, are significantly larger. The iPhone 13 Mini is closer to original SE size but still larger (around 8mm longer and 6mm wider).
I did a size comparison of the 13 mini when I was last in an apple store, and it was like 10mm bigger all around. A small phone by comparison but I like the SE better
Maybe, but mini version will be phased out in iPhone 14 lineup. Besides, iPhone SE is way cheaper, and I suspect part of its success is due to pricing.
As someone who very recently went from an iPhone SE - which I treasured since it came out (and which I nursed through one battery replacement and two screen replacements) - to an iPhone XR (triggered by a another digitiser failure), I can honestly say that I’m loving the performance boost, the massive battery life, the better camera and the brighter screen. However it’s taking some time to adjust to the size (150.9mm x 75.7mm x 8.3mm, versus the SE’s 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm).
I used to be able to slip my SE comfortably into the front pocket of my pants or jeans, and it’s size coupled with its rigidity meant I never worried that sitting or bending would damage it or discomfort me. I could even put it in a shirt pocket, where it’s relatively light weight (113g vs the XR’s 196gm), wouldn’t cause undue sag in my shirt.
For me it’s definitely been a trade off. Having gotten mostly used to it though, (meaning I now carry my phone in my hands much more than I ever did), I don’t think I would go back unless I could get significantly better specs than the original SE (performance, batter, brightness, camer) in the smaller form factor.
The new SE (2nd and 3rd gen) have the form factor of the iPhone 8 and no longer the small form factor of the iPhone 5. They’re bigger than the iPhone 13 mini.
There are no credible rumors that the 2022 SE will be anything like the Mini. Most likely is that the SE will get iPhone 13 internals, mainly SOC and camera, and no external changes at all. It’s just a spec bump.
