If I'm sitting at my desk I have my phone on the desk instead of in my pocket. It gets annoying have to pick it up to hit the fingerprint reader on the back when I fire up the 2-factor auth app.
I have a phone with the reader on the back. Seemed like a good idea til I realized I couldn't unlock it anymore while pinching it out of my pocket much less when it's flat against a table.
Disclaimer: this is just an observation and not criticizing your use case.
Of the 6 people sitting around me owning Androids and iPhones, all keep their phone on the desk (either tethered to the charging cable or just lying there) instead of keeping in their pockets. I would think that with the growing preference for larger screensizes, keeping a 5.5 inch phone in the pocket is not very convenient for sitting or having to take it out (not to mention accidentally accepting/rejecting calls while taking the phone out)..
When I'm up and walking about, sticking my phone in my back pocket is pretty convenient - I try to remember to remove it before I sit down, but not always
I do. I don't leave it there generally, but its often easier to get my phone in and out of my shirt pocket when I am seated, crouched, or otherwise actively engaged with something and I don't want to stand up.
Well, one use case I have is my phone sits on my desk arms reach away. I can lay my index finger on the touch id and check if I have a message. I don't have to lift my phone to use it.
Not saying I can't adjust my behavior. We all have our own way of using our devices.
I think having it in the back is genius as that's where I always have a finger as opposed to the front. It's so awkward to try to hold the phone in my hand securely AND holding my thumb on the scanner at the same time.
I do the exact same thing. It's not because I can't comfortably sit with an iPhone 4 in my pocket (sometimes I forget it's there), but it's because I can't comfortably remove and replace my phone in my pockets with a longer/wider phone. Thus, for easy access, it stays on the table.
The most effective solution I found was keeping my phone in my backpack instead of my pocket. When working I keep it somewhere I’d need to get up to get it.
Together with taming notifications this provides enough friction to discourage me from reaching for it at every spare second.
Once the phone reaches my hands the tricks in the post are not enough to remove the need for conscious effort to let go of the thing and put it back in its inconveniently positioned place.
I used to organise my wallet so when open one side only had one card in (to prevent card clash), but I risked things falling out.
My phone is normally in my hand anyway so using it is much more convenient. The only problem is it's takes 1/2 a second longer, and you don't want to look like an idiot trying to use your phone in rush hour.
I wish there was a quick way to launch it when the phone was open as sometimes double tap doesn't work and you open the phone, then you have to lock it again, double tap, touchID. I would use my watch, but then you have to look like more of an idiot rotating your arm and leaning over to the reader.
I have panicked several times after I put my MIFI device in my pants pocket instead of its specific pocket in my backpack. And the same when I place my wallet in my front pocket instead of the back after a transaction.
Decided to keep my phone out of my pocket while at home. Just put it on a shelf. I was really surprised at how often my hand just reflexively goes to my pocket for the phone. I only noticed it happening because my phone was not there.
Same with me: I hate having stuff in my pockets when I sit, specially with jeans.
But now that I'm aware that it might send the wrong message, I'll try to keep just my phone in my pocket (the first Galaxy S, it's not very big) if I have lunch with some I do not know very well.
Edit: As others have commented, I do always leave it face down on top of my wallet which hopefully always comes across as "I'm just leaving my crap here."
