Meh YC backs a lot of scams masquerading as businesses. This period of easy money and wealth concentration has fostered much in the way of misallocation of capital. Y-Combinator exists to make its owners money. Their primary concern is bloody Benjamins, not morality and the public interest.

Why? There's nothing special about YC, they're venture capitalists like any other.

No surprise that they want to make shitloads of cash through whatever dubious, underhanded means they think they can get away with.

YC has funded scummy companies before. InstallMonetizer comes to mind.

In their defense, I don't think YC claims to not find scummy shit. To me it seems that they have a moral compass comparable most financial institutions, i.e. none.

Why did YC fund this fairly obvious fraud?

Let's be clear: YC needs to quit financing ponzi scams. Or better yet, be punished for it.

By definition, a “YC Company” is given hundreds of thousands of dollars and direct hands on strategic advice on how to run the company. That’s the meaning of the concept.

The company in question has blatant securities fraud as their core business model.

QED

Here’s a logical construct in return. When people you like do unethical things they are still unethical.

What ethical standpoint is that? That's the devil which installs spyware on your machine.

So, they have a business plan, good for them. But it doesn't make them any less scammy, nor does it make it any less disappointing to see YC funding people with the same ethics as your average patent troll.

Well most of YC is predatory pricing covered in a veneer of good intentions and tech.

YC was one of initial investor, either they were part of the scam or not, who knows.

YC exists to gain a return on capital investment. I see no reason why a group of people making money from the labour of others would care about morals.

YC has never invested particularly morally knowing many of their founders and companies. I wouldn't say it's their strong suit.

YC invested in what was clearly an outright fraud? Or did they pivot do hard that nobody noticed?

How on god’s earth did YC invest in this without seeing through the obvious bullshit?

YC has some blood on its hands here - their investment lent legitimacy to this scam.

Agreed, see this thread here on HN that was posted recently about how much of a scam it is...YC backed it too, which is embarrassing to say the least!

YC provides seed money. No one should rely on YC for due diligence.

What makes you assume YC has no ethical basis for investment?

Evidenced by how many fintech startups that “lend” money to “those in need” that YC loves to accept.

It all seems extraordinarily predatory.

As I've said elsewhere, having dealt with them and seen who they invest in, morality does not seem to be an important aspect of YC investments.

Didn't stop YC from funding almost 100 of them[0] including this obvious scam that blatantly ripped off another's website and company too.[1]

Totally agree not trying to be critical of YC. Situations like Juicero, Theranos, this topic, et al scams, are interesting to observe.
