The HAVA [1] legislation was extremely misguided and IMHO designed to create an industry where none was needed to line even more rich pockets.

Ostensibly it was done to support disabled (blind) folks to vote without anyone else seeing their ballot, but has introduced a massive potential for fraud (lack of paper ballots originally) and distrust (can you verify your vote?) in the process. MAGA just took that distrust and weaponized it.

A significant amount of people have been duped into voting against their own interests.

Yeah that struck me as tone deaf too. US democracy has been tarnished by people voting in ways I didn't like!

You don't even need to think the election was stolen to argue that opt-out mass mail in voting is a transparently hilariously stupid idea if you care at all about a secure chain of custody secret ballot. You know, the thing we explicitly designed elections around after realizing how important it was given widespread abuse and fraud.

Lumping all these groups of people together as was done here is a great example of the mindless zombie tribalism going on, which in large part is a result of propaganda.

There is a pretty large closure of ideas that now get you pegged as "one of the Bad People" for even stating them publicly, without strongly held support. For example, even suggesting that our election systems in the US are horribly broken or just merely flawed, a widely accepted bi-partisan position just a few short years ago, puts you into the bucket of being a "horse-paste consuming, anti-vax, insurrectionist, conspiracy monger." I wish this was a strawman, but it ain't.

Americans voted for this bullshit.

Except, their voting rights were not taken away. They voted for a candidate that received fewer votes than his opponent. They didn't like the results. They were fed deliberate lies and baseless theories, and acted upon bad intelligence.

If this only harmed the people who voted for it, then I'd have no problem with it. The problem is that it's also harming all of the people who voted for the opposite but lost.

But they wanted their beloved fraudulent democrat voting masses to cast their votes in the general election. What a hypocrite ninny. Go to hell Bezos.

>get people to vote against their own interests.

This is one of the most obnoxious terms I see in contemporary political dialogue.

It's presumptuous, it's elitist, it's a thinly veiled way to say 'these people are too stupid to know what's good for them'.

SHOUTING doesn't make it true.

Elections do not matter, not for anything important. The civil rights act happened because people were willing to go to jail over what was right, the same goes for the draft.

Gerrymandering has made most elections farcical, and money does the rest.

Running as an independent is a way to get exactly nothing passed as both parties, which really are just one two-headed Hydra, will shut out outsiders.

And this only covers elected officials, most laws and regulations are made by life long bureaucrats.

It's amazing the myopia of people, this bill is but one of the thousand examples of our corrupt illegitimate government. Again the government does not care for you or your beliefs, it cares for power and money, it will pass secret trade deals, it will pass secret laws in secret courts, it will torture and imprison those that oppose it.

Does anyone have an honest response? America is a corrupt police state run by an unaccountable elite.

Amazing how so many people refuse to see the truth that is so obvious.

This is intentionally done by one political party that does not care about democracy. They push policies that restrict individual voting rights, gerrymander districts for minority rule, and expand the influence of money over people. This has been their plan for decades, as they see the younger and more diverse America as a threat to their ideology. We have got to vote them out at every level.

The worst part is that it's not just OpenAI, the politicians figured out this is a good way to draw votes. The right does it to draw the rust belt, and the left to draw the urban poor.

It also creates an unholy amount of bullshit jobs in law enforcement and the prison industry. Can't lose those voters.

Bad voters, bad.

It's like people voting for Trump.

Having seen how easily the electorate can be manipulated and how dumb people are, I've been seriously questioning democracy lately.

They did not vote against their own interests. They voted for their interests in the only choice available that claimed to represent their interests. The point is the voters don't have an actual choice and never did, most of the consent is manufactured. The ultimate point I guess is that liberal democracy, which often does not represent mass opinion is becoming more direct and the system does not really support that sort of decision making because only people like Trump can get up there to be voted for, demagogues. The elite now don't know how to put the genie back in the bottle. This article is crying out HALP!

People grossly endangered other peoples lives when they voted in November 2016.

Yep, that's the problem with congress and parliamentary systems. They divide guilt over hundreds of people, so that citizens cannot plausibly vote anyone out.

How naive and stupid are these government people? They've been swindled like this multiple times before, it was on the national news with the Obamacare website.

They're supposed to be the best we have. They won a vote after all.

It's manufactured consent. The voters don't have a meaningful choice on this axis.

Don't they know the law is only for people who vote wrong?
