Worst of all is seeing people defend these unacceptable practices and even Microsoft as a company. When will people understand the importance of having a computer system that doesn't answer to corporate interests? A system that is truly ours?

Why are you defending Microsoft so aggressively in this thread when they’re obviously in the wrong? It’s quite bizarre. Do you own stock or something?

Do you think the examples i presented are bullshit or do you not think they are ethical problems? Just because Microsoft embraces people working on different operating systems doesn't mean they suddenly started to respect the human rights of their users.

This comes back to my other comment in another thread, that everyone should be outraged at the companies enforcing this type of work/life balance, not Microsoft.

I'm just trying to understand the exceptional hatred some people have for Microsoft.

It's not Microsoft's job to moralize about what businesses need service. They have no problem giving software to authoritarian murderers around the world by the way, yet they have a problem with providing software to an industry we all desperately need for at least decades to come?

It doesn't matter what anyone thinks about Microsoft, but "trusted computing" is definitely BAD. No one wants that stuff.

do what? there are only 3 legitimate choices when it comes to operating systems (the thing that underpins every single computer). with that comes real social responsibility. this thread is evidence that microsoft is showing no regard for that responsibility.

Yup. I don't understand why people choose to rag on Microsoft when literally everyone else who has something to sell you besides the OS itself, does this. Maybe it's because Windows is from the era when MS was not a services company, and people, by force of inertia, expect windows to continue behaving as if MS is not a services company.

This should go without saying but this flagrant disregard for what users want is going to continue and get worse as long as people keep buying and using Windows. I wonder pretty often why people put themselves through this crap to use Windows.

Everyone blames Microsoft for this shit, but the real blame should go to everyone who STILL chooses to use their user hostile, buggy, platform.

If you want to see stuff like this change then use an OS that actually views its users as more than ad revenue.

I get where you're coming from, but I think it's indicative of exactly what I don't like about Microsoft's attitude, and part of why I don't use their software.

At the end of the day, it's my computer. Not theirs.

Regardless of how much it's "For my own good", that's not their decision to make.

It's my hardware, that I'm paying for. Ultimately, I need to have the final decision on what it does.

>> Not condoning Microsoft or anything, but perhaps someone needs it. :)

I really don't get why people are afraid of "condoning" Microsoft. They're one choice in a sea of thousands; to each his own. That mentality really bothers me.

Why does this have to be framed as people being ignorant? Could it be they don't want to have to give up the limited rights they still have left?

Microsoft wasn't forced to do anything here. They overestimated the value of their product, plain and simple.

Sad how Microsoft doesn't get the reactions it deserves anymore. Probably the single most harmful entity to computing.

I don't see why it's "not acceptable" at all. Why shouldn't they treat users this way? They can make more money with all these annoyances, and the people who hate it are just going to complain on internet forums and keep using Windows anyway. Seems like a good business strategy to me. Any time a business is in a position where they can abuse their customers endlessly and the customers will refuse to leave, it would be a breach of fiduciary duty not to abuse them for more profit.

It's insane that people allow corporations to babysit their personal devices like this. Fuck Microsoft.

It’s such scummy behavior. Do better, Microsoft

I agree, people are all to quick today to say, hey I don't like what that company is doing! Lets write laws to force them to change! It's like people forgot that the ultimate form of voting is with your dollars and patronage/use (even if its free). If you don't like what a company is doing, why are you supporting them by using their product? I know this doesn't work for some monopolies, but Microsoft is far from a monopoly, use Linux or OS X. Show them how much you are dissatisfied with their approaches by abandoning their product suites.

What? Why should we tolerate bad behavior? Only because it’s less bad than Microsoft’s? That is not a very high bar, you know.
