I wonder what that figure would look like if you factored in Foxconn City.

sort by: page size:

Foxconn has a number of factories there now.

Foxconn once said it would spend $10B building a factory in Wisconsin. Now the claim is $672M -- over next six years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn_in_Wisconsin

We'll believe it when it happens.

Foxconn employes 1.2Million people. Their largest factory has 300,000+ people [1]. What city of 300,000 do you know that hasn't had a bar fight / civil squabble / etc? It'd probably be more reason for concern if these things weren't happening.

What year would Wisconsin turn a profit off of Foxconn if it didn’t build a factory there at all?

I was a bit surprised to see FoxConn there with such a big revenue.

See Foxconn

They should use the Foxconn plant in Wisconsin.

> if Foxconn being the only employer in the city

As far as i know Foxconn factories are cities. You don't look for a Foxconn ad in your city, you get on the train and relocate there.

Wikipedia says: Number of employees 1,290,000 (2020).

The largest Foxconn factory is located in Longhua Town, Shenzhen, where hundreds of thousands of workers (varying counts include 230,000, 300,000, and 450,000).

[I live in a 400k city.]

Another Foxconn factory "city" is located at Zhengzhou Technology Park in Zhengzhou, Henan province, where a reported 120,000 workers are employed as of 2012.

Dupe, or well, a more sensationalist dupe.

In the original discussion someone pointed out that Foxconn has around 300000 employees. That's quite a lot of people, and statistically, you will have the same problems as you would in a town of that size.

The interesting thing about this chart is how unprofitable manufacturing is. Foxconn's profits are less than $3 billion on $115 billion in revenues (and $50-$60 billion in assets). Google has 3x the profit but less than half the revenue. When people ask why manufacturing has left the U.S., this is the reason why: it doesn't offer very good return on capital.

On the other hand, Foxconn provides jobs for over 1.2 million people, while Google employs less than 50,000. Also relevant to the debate about manufacturing.

1/3rd seems really high. FoxConn makes lots of other things besides Apple Products.

Does this include their part at foxconn?

Hey mate, you watched a documentary about Foxconn a decade ago! Good for you!

Read some actual economic data.

Just the state tax credits alone amount for ~$219k per "job".

How much money does a Foxconn worker need to make for how long to make up $219k in tax payments?

Seems pretty damn silly to me to pay a company to come here from China, pay them to hire locals, pay them to pollute and destroy.

Only way this makes sense is if politicians/land owners are going to be making a pile of money at the expense of Wisconsin's environment and people.

You’re thinking of a Foxconn project.

Foxconn?

Do you know the market rate for this kind of labor in the area? Is Foxconn competitive with other manufacturers? Feel free to cite any numbers if you've got em.

From what I've heard, Foxconn is a highly desirable place to work with top of market pay and benefits. A lot of people move just to work for Foxconn.

So clearly there's a dynamic going on here that'll take more nuance to understand than can be painted with a broad brush stroke from a Western perspective.

Any coincidence that Foxconn is building a large display factory in Wisconsin?

High level employees don't find the costs of Chicago insane, they like the perks of being in Chicago, will likely work from home/travel to other Foxconn locations a combined 50% of the time.

They won't be making that commute daily.
