Well, HN is kind of famous for veering off topic. It has its pluses and minuses.

Why do you mention HN at all? Doesn't seem relevant. It's just a place where people come to disagree.

HN as a general crowd is pretty poorly informed. It does attract the odd subject matter expert on some topics but I feel like half the comments I read on any subject are really off the mark, which I am sure mine are too

Care to share any examples of the kinds of things that the HN crowd tends to gloss over?

HN is a bit of an echo chamber. A very interesting and worthwhile echo chamber, but an echo chamber nevertheless.

This is not a criticism, but probably an unavoidable by-product of how it works and the audience it attracts.

My guess it because HN can feel a bit stifling to those that enjoy actual discourse.

Effectively, HN has a strong bias over interesting things.

I agree. Most of discussion is irrelevant to most HN people.

Unsurprising, I'm pretty critical of HN and they don't like that very much

is it just me or is it quite rare to see such a low level of discussion on HN?

That would probably rule out about 90% of the discussion on HN.

I love HN too, but I'm dubious it "points to the real diversity of what is happening." It mostly just has politics turned down to 2-3 out of 10.

Whoa, a contrarian point of view on HN?

HN isn't particularly diverse in its negativity.

I don't understand the waves of down votes in this thread. Not very HN-like.

Could you put that in terms that are less condescending and ad-hominem? My impression of HN is that it's not the place for that kind of tone.

HN is big into contrarianism across a wide variety of topics.

I think that if you examine the meta on HN dispassionately you'll see it's actually a very good reason.

It often gets couched in different language, but a great deal of HNers have a large dislike of HN because of either groupthink or mainstream-aversion.

HN is significantly better in its particular area of focus and somewhat worse in other areas. This is basically what you'd expect from a community with a narrower focus - HN hasn't done anything wrong on that front.

Are you sure there's really such a trend in HN discussions? I've never noticed it.
