I think that if you examine the meta on HN dispassionately you'll see it's actually a very good reason.

It often gets couched in different language, but a great deal of HNers have a large dislike of HN because of either groupthink or mainstream-aversion.

Any intuition on why this sentiment is so strong on HN? I find it quite puzzling.

I don't think it has anything to do with HN specifically, more to do with this bullshit reaching the mainstream. And HN is full of mainstream people (much as those same people would like to think they aren't).

My guess it because HN can feel a bit stifling to those that enjoy actual discourse.

HN is a bit of an echo chamber. A very interesting and worthwhile echo chamber, but an echo chamber nevertheless.

This is not a criticism, but probably an unavoidable by-product of how it works and the audience it attracts.

Not sure that I totally agree with the rationale here, what's the consensus here at HN?

I would definitely not describe HN as a place I come to get opposite points of view. I'm actually really very surprised anyone would see it that way, can you elaborate at all on why you do?

Why do you mention HN at all? Doesn't seem relevant. It's just a place where people come to disagree.

Well, HN is kind of famous for veering off topic. It has its pluses and minuses.

I've rationalized somehow that HN is okay because the content is relevant, insightful, etc.

Honestly I think HN draws a crowd that leans contrarian by nature. A lot of people here like a good argument and like to feel they've arrived at conclusions on their own brainpower, no matter how popular or unpopular. (There's a tempting trap that holding an unpopular opinion is validation you are thinking for yourself)

And the irony that your comment gets downvoted for pointing out that HN too suffers from a tribalist mentality about certain things (it does)... All these sharp minds don't like to be reminded of their own strange little obsessions and failings as human beings.

Why? Because HN people actually like it?

HN is full of a wide variety of people who have a wide variety of different beliefs and worldviews, and that's what you're seeing.

In my view, it's one of the things that makes HN great.

Huh? HN is about corporate interest and globalism. Also, I don't necessarily see why those are bad things.

Much of HN would disagree. Search HN's history for arguments.

I think OP is pointing out the irony that HN is popular among people who claim to not accept that.

I see your point, but I'd always thought HN was bastion of civil disagreement.

It's almost as if HN is a community made of different people with different opinions and not a singular entity.

Surprisingly to many people used to the hiveminds on other forums, HN is not homogeneous in the opinions of the denizens. Many of us are fine with the idea of making money, and don't see it as an all-encompassing evil to be slandered at every turn as if it were an argument unto itself.
