Except chatgpt isn't really a google replacement. Not only is the information routinely outdated, people are starting to finally realize just how often it's either blatantly or subtly wrong.
Google is much better positioned to have AI enhanced search.
I am substituting Google for ChatGPT whenever I have a question related to software development. There are many types of queries where ChatGPT is already a better choice.
This is exactly my thoughts and feelings after more than 20 years of Googling except that Google is largely still useful as it is. Sooner or later, however, most of the people will use ChatGPT or similar services as a better replacement for Google search or Google on steroids. Before the advent of ChatGPT researchers especially, have been clamoring for better Google search with more contexts, intuitive and relevant feedbacks.
With the new ChatGPT (Plus) features introduction for examples web online search and plug-ins, ChatGPT has becoming a very powerful and viable better alternative to Google search.
I asked ChatGPT that if it can replace Google search engine. It says :
"As an AI language model, I do not have opinions or personal thoughts. However, it is unlikely that chatbots like ChatGPT will replace traditional search engines like Google in the near future. While chatbots like me can provide quick answers to specific questions and engage in conversational interactions, they still have limitations and are not as comprehensive or efficient as search engines like Google. Google and other search engines have access to vast amounts of information and use complex algorithms to deliver relevant and accurate results.
That being said, chatbots like me can complement traditional search engines by providing an alternative, more conversational interface for accessing information. Additionally, advances in natural language processing and AI technology may lead to chatbots becoming more sophisticated and capable of handling more complex tasks in the future."
It's replaced Google for the "what's that called" tool.
Google used to be good at that task, but it's sucked for the last four years or so. Whenever they gave up on search and leaned into sludge content plus ads.
I don't think ChatGPT is mature enough replace a search engine. It provides pretty good results, but sometimes you would like to see other answers other than only one.
For me, ChatGPT has already replaced Google for most queries, so the point is moot.
Even if ChatGPT is flawed, it's still way better than Google. Using Google feels stupid; trying different search terms and clicking through dozens of websites with cookie popups and skimming all the bloated content for an answer which might be close to something you're looking for. ChatGPT gives the answer instantly.
I don't believe there's any future for Google (and Google-optimized websites).
Don't forget chatgpt is three weeks old. Google is 20 years old. To me chatgpt already replaced google on some searches. Give it more time, there is only room for improvement here.
ChatGPT just saves us the inconvenience of skimming through the websites in the first page of Google Search. We have become even lazier. We just want to type in our thoughts and get an answer in seconds. Now, if Google does a ChatGPT-like experience in the Search, then I'd probably come back to Google. I won't mind the ads.
Before ChatGPT's December 15th nerf update I was starting to use it in place of Google for technical questions. Something like ChatGPT will one day smoke what we consider search engines to be today.
