The reception on the nixos discourse is worth a look: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/introducing-flakehub/32044

I feel like your comment could lead yo valuable discussion on the Nix repo's issues or https://discourse.nixos.org/

Ass that article says, it’s possible but awkward. It gets better with Flakes https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Flakes

What is Determinate Systems, the official group behind Nix? Not at all clear to me from the site: https://determinate.systems/

(Also, the support(?) phone number at the bottom seems pretty unusual!)

Just trying to get my head around, as a Nix-interested non-user (other than toying with it briefly years ago) what Flake is, who it's from, how important the controversy mentioned elsewhere is, if I should care, if I'm just starting whether I should use it or not, etc.

Interesting- and there's also http://nixos.org/

It's not? I thought that the NixOS creator calling flakes "the future of Nix", implied that it kinda was.

For anyone interested in learning Nix Flakes:

Oh this is so interesting. I switched to NixOS (with Flakes) about a week ago and will really love to see more projects in the ecosystem.

The Nix team, including the Nix author and chief developer of flakes (upstream in this thread, so be kind all), is also working right now on enabling the nix3 UI for non-flakes setups as well: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/2023-01-16-nix-team-meeting-mi...

Consensus is hard but I'm glad to see people coming together on this. Really looking forward to seeing the new Nix command and flakes move forward (independently)

Sure thing. I think most of the discussions have been cross-referen ed in this issue: https://github.com/NixOS/nix/issues/859

I think that NixOS could definitely become a foundational next-gen distribution if they fix the Channel system. One fix I'm particularly fond of is flakes.

I've been smitten by NixOS ever since I first tried it 2 years ago. Its the first carefree experience I've had with my system. As a side note, this result includes first tiny contributions of mine!

That said, I really hope the community gets their stuff together on Flakes. They're designated as experimental and official document doesn't recommend them, but all the cool kids are already using them everywhere and it is fracturing the efforts and alienating newcomers.

Also considering posting your ideas to the Nix forums or possibly github issues, lots of activity there and you’ll probably get some good feedback before publishing.

I wrote a blog post on NixOS/home manager configurations with nix flakes. I make sure to link out to other resources for those who don’t have the whole background. See: https://jdisaacs.com/blog/nixos-config/

Culture war grandstanding drowning out the much more interesting discussion around Determinate System’s pledge to support the long-debated Nix Flakes officially.

Nix Flakes looking like the real source of the schism in the Nix community.

i'd be curious to hear your experiences trying to contribute or learn about nixos with respect to this. what you're describing here i've never seen on the nixos PR or issue trackers, nor in the Matrix rooms. i don't spend much time on the nixos discourse though: are you having your threads derailed by ideological debate over there?

My first time seeing Nix, very promising https://nixos.org/#asciinema-demo-cover

Definitely Nix deserves a try.
