> I think this will only further increase the value of the real

The images in these ads show women with exaggerated features that one would never find in real life. For some subset of porn consumers, this may actually decrease the value of the real.

>We’ve limited the ability for DALL·E 2 to generate ... adult images.

I think that using something like this for porn could potentially offer the biggest benefit to society. So much has been said about how this industry exploits young and vulnerable models. Cheap autogenerated images (and in the future videos) would pretty much remove the demand for human models and eliminate the related suffering, no?

> The choice in porn (especially pictures) is blurry. We already have egirls and hent#i.

Porn is an early form of "opting out of reality". It's often (usually, I think?) a substitute for actually having sex and/or a long-term sexual relationship.

So, it should be no surprise that it's already diverged from reality and will continue to do so.

> That sex should look more like porn is quite a dystopian future for women

Oh believe me, women have wicked fantasies you wouldn't consider being "good things".

> my bet is that this will lead to less porn consumption, an absolutely massive win.

I'd take you up on it, but there's absolutely no way to accurately measure this.

> I can always depend on these kinds of articles for the sin of omission. Unrealistic standards for women ... nevermind the standards women have for men.

Yeah, but a charitable interpretation is that this is the female perspective and anxieties on AI porn/relationships/intimacy.

I'm sure there have been articles that focus on the male exploitation(emotionally, economically, etc.) these services do without mentioning the female body image issues they may exacerbate.

> How about something more realistic, like character assassination campaigns?

if fake porn does become ubiquitous as you argue, wouldn't the impact of such assassination be greatly diminished?

> I feel like there are a lot of work that can be done in Porn with AI.

Well, one of the de-facto test images for image processing belongs to a Playboy model [0], so it looks like a natural evolution in the field.

Actually it's amazing how image processing revolves around sexual imagery.

> The vast vast majority of advertisers do not want to be displayed next to porn.

This i dont understand though. Who wouldn't their product to be subconsciously associated with sexual satisfaction?

> Social media is incredibly sexualized too.

In no small part because social media is an advertising medium for porn.

> Porn and AI is gonna get real messy.

From a practical standpoint I think it is going to be an unmitigated nightmare: people creating AI revenge porn, fake porn of famous people, etc.

From a legal standpoint, I don't think AI changes that much. People still own their image and while I would support stronger penalties for creating fake media of people, the law protects third parties using your image without your permission. Revenge porn already carries specific penalties in many jurisdictions[1].

> I guess there’s the question of if we even should, since none of it’s real anyways.

I absolutely think you should have say over the release and distribution of porn that uses your image. Not because it's wrong to make porn, but because you are impacted by its existence.

[1] I am generally skeptical of the ability of the prison system to deal with these kinds of things, but if we are going to have one I am glad it's included in the list of crimes.

> Unless you believe there's some sinister cabal out there conspiring to hurt 18-25 years with porn, you'll just have to accept what's out there is what people pay to see.

I don’t think porn companies are necessarily trying to harm people in the same way I don’t think social media companies, casinos, drug dealers, etc. are necessarily trying to harm people. They are trying to make money, and they don’t care too much if they cause harm in doing so.

> Are men really replacing flesh & bone prostitutes with VR sex sims?

Considering people are already buying Realdolls. I don't doubt it.

> Is this really a "good" development?

Maybe in some niche cases. But I'd say it wouldn't be good considering how damaging porn/sex addiction can be.

>> all his "demo" screens are filled with porn

I don't see any porn there. They may be images of models that participate in adult-themed photo shoots, but none of those images are 'porn'.

It's also not uncommon for images of women from magazines such as Playboy to be used in graphics research. One of the most famous images in computer graphics, 'henna', is a scan from a Playboy magazine.

> Because porn objectifies women.

Next time I open a porn video that features no women at all, I'll be sure to take a moment to appreciate how it's objectifying women.

Regardless of your false statement, porn objectifies everyone involved. That's the point of porn in the same way that hooking up with someone for a night and going about your business the following day objectifies both of you. There's nothing wrong with being sexually interested in someone else and nothing else.

> As far as I can see, porn will be almost completely AI-generated within the next few years

How confident are you about that? I can see AI taking over a small subset, creating new categories etc, but I doubt the sheer breadth of porn available on the internet is going to get replaced.

I would expect to hear that fake video avatars have completely taken over OnlyFans before AI is generating picture and audio perfect lengthy porn scenes that covers the vast array of categories porn sites offer. Maybe this is happening though and I'm just unaware.

> The real usecase is porn, but they're too tactful to say it.

I don't know why people keep projecting their own desires onto others, lol.

>The porn industry

Honestly ... I think the rise of [almost breaking the uncanny chasm] AI-generated images and video is going to both help and hurt the porn industry

How will it 'help'? Generate, on-demand, whatever form of sexual fantasy the user can prompt

How will it 'hurt'? Generate, on-demand, whatever form of sexual fantasy the user can prompt

When actual, IRL humans are involved, there are always limits to what can be produced

When that limitation is gone ... the cuffs will be off!

Is AI-generated 'underage' sex still "pedophilia"? When those 'engaging' in whatever activity the prompter has suggested 'do not `exist`'?

What about so-called 'extreme' BDSM/pain/fetish/etc? If the 'actors' are all AI-generated ... is it still [potentially] `wrong`?

There are a HOST of ethical and legal issues that are about to hit the porn industry ... and those who want to - rightfully - prosecute those who want grossly-illegal/-unethical material!

Strictly by the letter of the law ... it 'cannot' be `kiddie porn` if the images are not of real people.

Yet ... by the spirit of the law ... it most certainly is `kiddie porn` if the images are of obviously `underage` individuals!

Or what about so-called 'snuff videos'? It is actually a beheading if the `beheaded` is AI-generated?

The legal system is going to have a LOT of work in front of itself in this dawning era, to be sure!

> I wonder if a lot of this outrage isn't from the tech side (they tend to be fairly open about that stuff) but rather if it is coming from the adult entertainment industry, as this kind of thing literally destroys their entire business model.

Does it destroy the business model where you can see all the images for free on the internet, or the business model where you can pay money to converse with an hourly Filipina worker who will claim to be the same person who appears in the images?

Where does the adult entertainment industry get hurt?

>So are you suggesting that clothed women will be better for them than nude women because ...?

If they take out the nude pictures they'll be able to put the magazine in more outlets.
