Nope, YouTube blocks some videos from being played and I'm not getting around those in any way. Some videos have ads in them that come up from the bottom, those are preserved and not touched.
I do, but YouTube constantly finds a way around it. I've been running Adblock Plus and Ghostery Lite, but YouTube ads have poked their way through again.
Some videos have ads as part of the video. Can't do anything about those, sorry.
I'm talking about the videos that have YouTube ads embedded within them that interrupt the video while it's playing.
That trick also appears to work for some pay-for-view websites (as do 'archive' and '12ft ladder' work for some websites). Again, I don't have enough items to prove it and I can't remember which website it was that I tried it on when it worked.
I boycott websites that demand money. "Plenty more fish in the sea."
Sadly, not anymore - used to be the case quite a while ago, but not today anymore as the ads come from the same domains the videos are streamed from.
Those simpler popover-ads which can be closed clicking an X in the upper right corner still are blocked tho...
Spilling my secret tho (and YouTube execs hate me for it!): i block YouTube in my mind and only rarely go to it if i really need to watch a video (which, for me, is rarer than i ever thought it'd be).
Its possible to not retrieve ads, at least for some videos. I never see ads on the ones I watch. I do not use an ad blocker, I just exercise control over HTTP and DNS. Could you provide an example of a video where you believe its impossible not to retrieve ads.
I think I've had issues before where YouTube refused to play videos at all while I had my AdBlocker blocking the ads. Not sure whether it was intentional.
Yes and no. I was suspecting something was up with YouTube ads because I'm getting this error "An error occurred. Please try again later. (Playback ID: ...)" with the extension Improve YouTube!.
When I disable it the error disappears. Also when I reload the page while it's on, I can then watch the videos. But that's really annoying. Usually the video page with the error will refresh automatically after a while, so I suspect the error refers to the actual ad and not the main video. And after the YouTube has determined that the ad has played (or thinks I have watched it) for long enough the main video gets loaded automatically which of course does not cause an error since it's not blocked.
Interestingly when I disable the Improve YouTube! extension ads are being blocked normally. I use uBlock Origin and Gostery as well.
Actually, no.
> they are served from the same inscrutable urls as real video
This may be right, so host based adblocking may not work.
However, uBlock origin etc definitely block youtube ads and it works as a browser extension so they have access to the DOM and probably do something there.
