When dealing with mental illness, attempting to rational behavior is an exercise in frustration.

I'm not a psychiatrist --- but you don't have to be to recognize that Musk exhibits some of the symptoms.

Musk's behavior increasingly suggests he has psychiatric problems. Even if there is someone around him with the guts to suggest he seek help, he probably wouldn't listen.

It would be callous of me explicitly to spell it out, but, going forward, his reputation may be the least of his worries.

Really Elon Musk has struck me as honestly in need of psychiatric help - not in a derogatory way but a sincere one. Between the outbursts, shortsighted impulsive decisions, and well being CEO of so many different companies at once it sort of resembles some combination of ADHD and Bipolar.

I think it's unfair to imply this relationship between mental illness and treating people badly. Most people with mental illness don't do things like that, and Musk can be perfectly mentally healthy and just be an asshole.

This is a slightly misguided view given that Musk himself has on several occasions suggested that he might be suffering from a mood disorder. If that’s true, then there is a very clear psychiatric explanation for his behavior. Bipolar disorder may also account for some of what we perceive as “genius”. Kanye West is another excellent example of this.

FWIW I’m not denying he’s a highly intelligent person. But that doesn’t exclude the possibility of bipolar.

I think Elon Musk is just mentally unwell.

I don't think it's OK to remotely analyze a mental illness of another person.

I think that Mr. Musk is an undiluted asshole and one of the worst douchebags to ever grace our planet, which he has proven again and again.

But analyzing his mental condition is sure as shit not up to me or to anybody else.

I agree but this assumes Musk is acting rationally. He has been a bit odd lately. Maybe he got too high with his girlfriend and got weird. I don't know. Then again he is also human and prone to acting irrationally out of spite or vengeance.

Is Musk bipolar?

I can't grasp it (actually not that interested in doing so), but atm I tend to look from the point of psychopathology regarding Musk. Seriously, something here is no yes.

Have you watched the interview?

It's worse than I expected. Musk is out of his gourd. I don't know if it's the drugs or actual insanity but I don't just see an asshole but someone losing touch with reality. It's not autism or even "outsourcing his politics", he is barely coherent. This man will likely need institutional help.

Knowing nothing but chatter on the internet I'd say Musk goes through manic episodes.

I mean looking into his mental state is certainly not ridiculous. No matter for or against Musk's his politics, business ventures or 4chan edgelord shit. Being in his position must leave marks on your mental health.

I believe Musk is smart, but also bipolar and narcissistic, and likely often on stimulants, which makes him regularly do dumb things.

Is it really an unusual mental state for Musk?

Seems like normal behaviour for him, he's often in the news for being a dick, just as much as he is for his entrepreneurial ventures.

I'm a bit perplexed that you see trashing a man's character with certainty as right and pondering if his actions could reflect a struggle with mental illness as wrong.

I don't like Musk, nor do I trust the things he says, but I usually err on the side of granting people some humanity.

Chalk it down to MDS - Musk Derangement Syndrome. There is something in Elon Musk which triggers people to start acting irrationally just like there is something in e.g. Donald Trump which does the same. It is probably related to the way they - Musk and Trump and others like them - act like they are not bound by the laws which keep others from attempting the types of ventures these often undertake as well as their lack of humility about them. Some are awed by their boldness and become fanboys, others are disgusted by their lack of humility and failure to abide by the standards and fall victim to some form of 'derangement syndrome'. When Musk started gaining successes with SpaceX and Tesla there were many articles posted by the 'fanboy' section of the crowd while those who started to suffer from DS were just waiting for him or his companies to trip somewhere, somehow so they could torch the man. His purchase of Twitter as well as the underwhelming performance (compared to the claimed capabilities) of Tesla's 'fully self driving' system have given them ample fuel just waiting for someone to put a match to.

What do you think I meant with "Musk has all but confirmed"?

I'm not diagnosing him. I'm just pointing out that it makes sens to agree with Musk's self-diagnosis.

Untreated mental illness or autism is not excuse, but it's at least partial explanation. Only people who believe in pseudoscience like soul can think people have something innate like "true self" in them that does not need explanation.

I don't see how your mention of OCD, bipolar disorder, narcissisms or sociopathy is relevant to someone with a supposed social skill disorder being really good at navigating and conquering the social world.

To me the claim that Musk has Aspergers is like being told an Olympic marathon runner has a leg disability.

This is a forum. People will say stuff. You may or may not agree with the stuff they say. They'll do it anyway. Judging someone's mental state as an outsider is fine as long as you don't purport to do it from the perspective of telling them what to do next, that's pretending you're a doctor. But I've seen plenty of actual doctors do remote diagnosis of Musk's various mental issues (ditto: Trump, Putin) and I'm fine with it, I just take it with a grain of salt. If we take being a sad excuse of a human being as a reflection of someone's mental state then you are in fact engaging in the same, the only difference is whether or not you use terms with clinical relevance.
