I personally dislike much of Drudge's race baiting, religous baiting, and a host of other things he does on his soapbox, but I check his site more than any other for news.
No fluff, ridiculously fast load time, perfect balance of content and advertising. It surprises me that so many in the news world attribute his success to his views or scoops. I know there is a sizable minority like myself that read it regularly simply because it is the best designed news site on the internet.
The Drudge Retort was initially started as a left-leaning parody of the much larger Drudge Report, run by the conservative muckraker Matt Drudge. In recent years, the Drudge Retort has become more of a social news site, similar to sites like Digg, in which members post links to news articles for others to comment on.
Knock the politics all you want but Drudge Report is an effective website in that it clearly conveys info to it's Target population. Website looks really cool @OP!
I'm not sure why you're being downvoted. Maybe some people are too blinded by their politics to think objectively.
The fact is that, visually speaking, Drudge Report has been the Craigslist of news for almost a quarter of a century. A big reason for its success is that it is easy and familiar to use, which is particularly attractive to its target demographic.
drudgereport.com seems hypocritical to me because they don't have many images for their own news stories, but make room for images that advertise other products. Advisments are counter-brutalism because they're very much frivolous and attention grabbing.
The Drudge report is used by several million people every day. It happens to be one of a handful of sites on the Internet my mother in law can actually parse and use reliably.
I aspire to make something as unusable as the Drudge Report someday.
Why does it not surprise me that someone who coded a newsletter for Drudge Report - a conservative cesspit of a website - is sounding like such a sore loser? Hmm.
(All the websites you linked have a similar conservative slant. I mean, the Washington Post? Seriously? Some people have no shame.)
