I'm in the UK and it did this - fresh install of Windows 7 (in a VM)

sort by: page size:

So I'm doing this to use it on a virtual machine. I have an old W7 install on a saved and cloned virtual machine, but I figure this is my path to a free upgrade. Seems legit, currently downloading the ISO from MS as I type this. Being a Linux user, I kinda hate it, but sometimes you need Windows, and I'd like to be able to test out things on it too.

Bugger. Windows 7+.

I've had Windows 7 sitting on the shelf since the day it launched, but haven't get got round to installing it...

It's amazing what you can accomplish while waiting for a Windows 7 install!

No, just a Win7 installation

Reminded me of the video where a guy did a fresh install of Windows 1.0 and upgraded all the way to Windows 7. An amazing amount of programs still ran by the time he got to 7.

Test Drive Windows 7 with Virtual PC - FREE. Experience Microsofts new operating system on your current system.

It appears to have a Windows installer as well.

I will investigate, but if you have a solid source for that it would save me the trouble. Thanks anyways. I’d really like for MS to stop doing this if they haven’t, I have a personal ban on running Windows outside of VMs until its over.

UPDATE:

Sigh... you are correct. Fresh install, Win10 Pro, same garbage.

I moved a Windows 7 installation between computers several times now - just clone and go. There's some whining and drivers on first boot, but otherwise it's fine. I really need to reinstall it, but can't be bothered right now, it works fine :D

I have a retail copy of Windows 7 on a DVD! But yeah, if you didn't buy it back in the day I'm not sure where you'd get it now.

Windows 10 (and I assume 11) has an option to "refresh" Windows in Settings.

I run XP on my machines, so here's what I did:

I downloaded the free (and legal) Microsoft Windows 7 enterprise trial ISO:

http://wb.dlservice.microsoft.com/dl/download/release/Win7/3...

I installed the free VMWare Player (actually I already had it but needed to update to support Windows 7 more natively)

http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmplayer/VMware-player-... ( or http://www.vmware.com/download/player/download.html )

I used one of the free vmx generator tools to make an image ready for Windows 7 and set the ISO as the CD drive

Installed in less than 30 minutes (including VMWare stuff) and then I can test in a pure Windows 7 default environment.

The great thing about the Enterprise trial is it lasts for 60 days, then you can "rearm" (google it) for a couple more times, but even when it's expired, you can use it for an hour before auto-shutdown which is plenty of time to test pages.

thanks for the info - I somehow missed that when I installed win7 on my machine

In related news, it's safe to install windows 7 again.

This article came exactly 1 day too late for me - I literally just blew away one of our test machines yesterday morning, only to find I can't activate it unless I re-install Windows 7. To make matters more fun I chucked the Win7 install disk in the trash thinking, I won't need this again!

The Windows 11 installer is basically Windows 7 for the first part too, though this might be changing soon.

This is the first step for any store bought machine: a fresh install from your own install media. It's the only way to be sure (and is much faster).

Weird, last windows install I did was like 4 months ago and I didn't get that, DL from Microsoft ...

I wonder if it depends on the image.

I bet this was with Wubi which made a Windows file with whole install and booted into that.

I'm working now to move my Win 8 install to a VM then I can format this damn machine an install a real OS. All I need Windows for really is Skype and MS Teams.
