I don't want to be mean, but isn't Croydon a generally undesirable area?

Indeed. The environment appears to be quite hostile, I would refuse to live in or pay any social contribution in a town that judges certain streets only fit for certain classes of people. That way bad things lie.

I'd be curious to know what suburb is so awful, so I don't move there.

Yep. Been living here for around 12-13 years and it's definitely a mixed bag. Plenty not to like about it, but that can be said for many cities with the sort of history as this one. Not planning to move anytime soon (partly because I love living close to work and partly because it's a relatively affordable city compared to some others in the region. Suburbs aren't for me and I guess on some Sisyphean level, I don't like the idea of just moving because it's got problems. When the only people who don't flee to the 'burbs are those who are unable, you get issues like this city's been seeing for years.

Not that bad? Hate it less? What an exciting pitch for the new nuisance in your neighborhood.

I'm not familiar with that area but I can infer that it must be pretty miserable for people who care about their surroundings, respect public spaces, and work hard to maintain a high standard in the environments they occupy. More power to them.

Definitely is a nice district, but I wouldn't live there.

Bringing Edinburgh into the mix definitely reinforces this take. "I want to live somewhere that's not total shit, but a bit shit... all the time"

I recently visited downtown there, after spending a year in suburbs due to obvious reasons. Even magpies in downtown are disheveled and downtrodden. I'm not making that up...

If you avoid downtown and like suburbs it's a nice city.

No offence, but that sounds like a terrible place to live.

it's a city that way less desirable to live for young people, and for the vast majority of the population.

I moved here over a decade ago, and it's fantastic. So much cheaper than Cambridge yet perfectly commutable, and great countryside to boot.

But yes, we tell everyone that it's really bad so we keep it to ourselves.

I lived in that area for five years, definitely not a place you want to be in.

So it is a bad place to live.

Besides, that is in reply to a comment that is just trying to make people aware that is a bad part of town.

The replies you got are borderline insane.

Is it worse than any other American suburb?

Most assuredly not a wealthy area. But the local government is pretty awful.

That's more to do with living in a bad area.

Seriously, the area around Yale is terrible.

Do you live there? Is it that bad?

-WAS- not a nice place to live
