I was just testing it using other top news on HN, like this one: Roy Bates's death.

It seems there is a bug when I enter this line:

  "Roy Bates died on"
Paddy Roy Bates's wiki page keeps getting added to the right column continuously.

Network connectivity is one very big problem. What good is a blazing fast server with 2Mbps (disruptive!) link? This is the very reason a lot of people would hate their own servers. Cloud = connectivity + (computing power) Yay! for connectivity.

Do or do not, there is no try. - Master Yoda
And, this link seems very appropriate to link now:

A friend of mine actually does this. He's an MS hire. No wonder he figured it out long ago :)

Does IE copy parts of code from Firefox? [Honest question.]

Looks nice. But, how about not executing any JS content that is injected by plugins or theme other than what is required(like jQuery etc.)? I am talking about the "Tweet" link. Is that possible?

"Guys are fascinated and scared by girls who roll up their sleeves and take on a job that society labels as “men’s work”"

I always opined that, "women have a lot of emotional strength". You can just imagine how difficult it is to take care of, and raise a toddler. It is so hard. But, somehow women are naturally good at this, and I am just as fascinated by this fact.

Oh! The benefits of dynamic IPs.. :)

I think any beginner would love to have a [cross platform] offline browse-able reference/tutorial/guide whatever, be it MDN or W3Schools. Going to google for every damn thing is just a waste of time. And, for people with little stacks, it usually deviates them making them forget what they were trying to do in the first place. I am talking about something like php.net's offline 'chm' file. But, for html, javascript and css. Does anything exist already?

This wired article _seems_ to explain it:

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/09/wireless-explainer/2/

Why take all the pain of creating/editing screenshots, explaining through an article? You could have made a video instead. I personally prefer videos to articles when it comes to learning something -new-.

I probably like them better because, I started off with kevin skoglund's php essential training. And, he was really good at explaining things.

Also, I found the discussion on this post[1] strikingly relevant in this context.

I block google analytics, and I think many others too do so(yay! for ghostery).

You probably are getting a little(lot?) more visitors than what ga says.

I have a win 8 professional license from DreamSpark(my university had to apply for this). The license I got was valid for 2 years, and I graduate in 6 months. So, it's not really hard like you say.

And here I am, still desperately waiting for the perfect speech to text converter that just removes need of having to type text entirely. I can see a future where programs are narrated.

Right, now that I think about it, even I probably type faster than I speak.

Also, the github buttons on index page.

On another (un?)related note, Citibank ran a 'Cyber Monday' in India where

"it would provide discounts of up to 60 per cent"

    McAffee, trial, 30 days
Haha I see what you did there :)

Just the other day I was looking for ways to offer email@mydomain to people who request it. I found that GApps was no longer offering free email. So, I ended up using Forwarders in cPanel to do the thing for me.

Forwarders in cPanel simply copy all incoming mail to email@mydomain to myother@email. If I didn't already create an email account email@mydomain, the incoming mail WILL NOT be stored on server which makes this a feasible solution. If I had, incoming mail would be copied to myother@email.

This analysis, but for hosting provider (although most will belong in cloud) would be interesting.

GMail on Chrome had/s this feature!

XSS UNCLEAN! DON'T USE!!

[](Any url in here) should be xss cleaned. But it isn't!

> find somebody knowledgeable in the field or industry,

This, or actually get yourself into the field, work for some time.

In a lecture(startupschool), Jessica Livingston(Partner, YC) talked about a guy who made app that allows users to order food from their phone. She said that he was an example of 'a good founder' because he actually joined a restaurant as a waiter just to learn how things worked.

Take away? (Get your self involved in, know widely about, find spots which you should do better) in the field you want to start your company in[Joel Spolsky also said something of this sort in his lecture!]

Ok, I would like to take this opportunity to ask something about HN.

What if, say a month later Gmail.com goes down again. Then, how do I submit another post to HN? I mean wouldn't I be redirected to this one?

Ah figured that myself. Now I can bring up old discussions again :)

Why do bad things happen to good people?

Perfectly understood what you said. Good and Bad are associated to things by individuals.

I think I probably wanted to know what one should do when Bad things happen.

And, I guess I know the answer to that already: just keep moving forward.

We're thrilled that you've come all the way here to buy our products! Thank you!

However, we did not expect the load on our servers would be this high. We are working hard right now to fix the problem.

Please be patient and come back in a couple of hours.
    There's still time...

Oh alright.

I've never been to Chad's garage so far and probably ever won't.

One point to see here is that digital things are unlike physical things and can be copied and stored somewhere. You wouldn't even know!

What?? No!! You should always have option to fart silently.

one https, and one make-private-ability please! :P

Nice project.

I thought this was the reason apps existed: to cut down loading time. I hate it so much when someone, in their app embeds a browser and load their site.

Everyone dies. :'(

I think there is no point in regretting. Regret can only lead to more regret in future if you don't concentrate more on the present.

“Whatever happened, happened for the good; whatever is happening, is happening for the good; whatever will happen, will also happen for the good only. You need not have any regrets for the past. You need not worry for the future.”

[this one is from Bhagawad Gita]

   ((time/totaltime)*100).toFixed(2)
would be nice.

There is something called Gharpay.in

It looks promising.

It's simple things like this, that blow my mind. How ignorant I was the whole time, about a very important thing!

Anyway, long term catastrophe averted.

Whoa! there seem to be a lot of forks for the original PuTTY.

I never used anything else other than this and putty itself.

Perhaps there should be a wiki page for "Comparision of PuTTY Forks" on wikipedia.

And hence the missing variable Y.

It has to be declared, defined, initialized, incremented, kept track of by the person reading the source.

Anyone notice the comment (view source) on the bottom in red? Whoa! How?

It's a facepalm!

Q = "HN Front Page".

Silence.

do great stuff

I remember awhile back here on hn, a guy did an experiment: hire somebody on craigslist to watch him while he works. That's all. It turned out to be pretty productive.

It's even more awesome if you can get someone who understands your work.

<programmer></programmer>

So find & _pair_ with a programmer you are compatible with.

Do other fun things as well.. like say, play prince or blood or lion king. Growing up playing these games along with mspaint and pinball, formatting c drive couple if times made up my childhood.

And due to having a computer early in my life, I turned out to be more technically "aware" than most of my peers.

Now the important thing for me was having that curiosity. Leave them curious for more. :)

How about this:

An ultrabook (Asus? Dell? Lenovo?) + Tablet(Ipad? Nexus?) + Powerful Desktop (Dell Vostro? Mac Mini?)

You see, it's psychology - Everyone prefers 3 candies for 12$ to 1 candy for 10$.

Nice. I like the idea of curation by the people.

This one's good as well: http://iwantaneff.in/repo/
