SIRUM Co-founder here! Super pumped and happy to chat with anyone!

We help orgs donate surplus meds that are often short-dated. We're tackling the $5B of unused, UNEXPIRED meds that go to waste every year in the U.S.

OP here. Posting this to encourage other companies and startups to hook up with Watsi and fund medical treatments for people in need.

Ping Chase or Grace @ Watsi - I'm sure they'll be super excited.

Oh cool, Watsi is one of the charities that the funds are being shared with. Gaming for medicine!

congrats ya'll, what happened in the past couple months to spike the number of patients funded? Would love to hear more about 'growth hacking' a charity like this.

We're really excited about this. If you can really raise tens of thousands of dollars like this, it could really change how non-profits operate. The payments are public and broadcast on Twitter, which is also really cool.

Agreed! I've set up matching donations for your matching donations among my friends. Thank you for supporting this cause...I think a lot of mental conditions go ignored and un-healed as a consequence of not understanding these substances well (both the benefits and side effects).

I'm happy to see these kickstarter clones popping up for medical causes. I'm much more apt to donate when I can better see where my money is going (and hope I don't get scammed in the process).

My wife and I have been donating to Cures Within Reach https://www.cureswithinreach.org, which funds repurposing research.

This is especially important for rare conditions that are unlikely to ever see robust R&D purely on the basis of the size of the market.

Donated $40.

Two days ago, there was a post on HN announcing Watsi, essentially a Kickstarter for healthcare (Sorry if I'm discrediting it's overall value in any way, it's a great idea: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4424081). Most of us in the Western world aren't the target audience for Watsi, but this seems appropriate. Can we not make this happen and see a cohesive case to be made for those asking questions about cause and background?

Incredible initiative! Where can I donate :)

To the extent that anyone on HN knows an active philanthropist looking for potentially highly impactful but severely underfunded causes - send them this article.

I believe there's a case that funding MDMA research has very high dollar/impact returns - or at least that it's likely enough that it's worth a thorough exploration.

It sounds like they still need to raise about $10-15 million, which is shockingly small compared to the ~$1.5bn/yr NIMH budget - and all of it will come from private philanthropists, as governments aren't yet willing to fund the work and for-profit companies don't see much profit yet due to the lack of patentability.

If you're on HN and this is the first you're hearing about this research, some resources:

- A short video excerpt from a documentary on MDMA therapy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9iKx2MKS70

- NY Times article - https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/29/us/ptsd-mdma-ecstasy.html

"Medical research campaigns do not really go viral. We do not get a ton of people donating $5. You should consider donating as much as you are comfortable with."

Perhaps today we can make a difference, Mihai. I wish you much happiness and joy each day you have.

In celebration, most of the patients on their website are just $50 away from being funded: https://watsi.org/. Go fund one of them!

That's exactly what I'm proposing, and I'm overjoyed to see that happening in the US! Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I'm going to do more research on their finances, but if nothing bad comes up I'll probably move a bunch of my donation budget to them.

Thanks for the pointer. Sponsored 3 persons treatments already.

Good idea! Keep us informed if it worked, I would be very happy to donate!

I helped found www.dharmarelief.org

"We are calling all traditions of Buddhism to come together to make a difference during the COVID19 medical supply shortage. Our organization works with a trusted FDA-approved manufacturer to import surgical masks and distribute them to medical workers through a coalition of centers and volunteers."

- We have raised $280k since Tuesday with a goal of $500k. - We have relied on all our networks thus far to make this work. - The other organizers involved do not really see the value of social media but I am slowly convincing them.

I know there are a lot of smart and experienced people who, so I am asking for your help to make a difference through this organization.

Thank you for your time and your experience, I sincerely appreciate it. :)

Donated :) Love seeing this sort of direct action!

Come to the US and help fund our opioid treatments and naloxone purchases.
