You're probably better off waiting for 3rd gen Ryzen which sounds like it will be a nice all-around performance bump. Should be arriving in ~6 mo.

I think Ryzen 3 is coming this year, so it might be better to wait a bit.

Ryzen 3 3100 was launched in May 2020 about ten months after the Ryzen 7 3700X, so I would expect a pretty long lead time following the Ryzen 7 5800X launch.

Still if you're shopping in this category, I'm not sure it's worth it to wait for next generation.

I have been looking to upgrade my i7-4770k rig to a Ryzen 5900x, but after seeing this insanity and paying attention to what the mfg's are being vague about, looks like I'll be waiting until June (or later). By then, there may be an entirely new generation of chips ready.

Ryzen is not "next gen" anymore. It will be released in less than two weeks. Not enough time for Intel to come up with anything groundbreaking.

This is why I almost always wait for second gen of a new kind of hardware. Eg, my current CPU is a Sandy Bridge. When the i series came out I wanted one badly, but I waited and on the first week of launch bought second gen.

The same with the upcoming Macbooks set to be demoed on the 10th. If I want one, I'll wait for at least second gen.

Regarding AMD CPUs this is an unusual situation, because 3rd gen or 4th gen may be optimal, which is highly uncommon. This is because next gen will run on faster ram. The bottleneck on the Zen 2 processors was cache delays. The bottleneck on the Zen 3 processors is ram delay. This shows to me there is more improvements to come. However, unfortunately, this also means cost will go up quite a bit in newer generations with smaller gains making it not as worth it. I don't game much and I do data science work, so processing is done in the cloud, so I have virtually no reason to upgrade my nearly 10 year old CPU as odd as that may sound.

I'm looking forward for the scores of the Zen3 AMD threadripper. I'm just not sure if I should upgrade as soon as they are out or if I should wait the next-gen for DDR5...

Yeah, I wouldn't set your hopes that high, if that were the case Intel has 4 to 5 generations of silicon already prepped that they could start churning out in volume within 3 months.

Comparatively, AMD has been building chips to order as of late, since they do not have the money to build a bunch of chips that may or may not sell, so your looking at a 3 to 4 month delay before you can get a new chip like Ryzen after announcement.

The cache arrangement (see pic halfway down) and better branch prediction are interesting though, cache has always been a space where Intel has been able to use way less transistors to store the same amount of data.

Not a CPU expert here, but isn't this a comparison of AMD next gen to Intel current gen? Won't Intel have a new CPU out, too, when the Ryzen is actually released?

I'm waiting for AMD Ryzen so I can plan the move away from my 2600 (not K).

Wait for the Haswell. It's only a few months away.

Depends which next Ryzen you mean. 6000 series has been out for almost 6 months. CPU is the same, gpu is much better. The 7000 are expected to be much better - zen 4 + rdna 3. Yummy

Same. I'm on a 10700k and thinking on an upgrade. I'll wait for X3D parts to come out (assuming they're doing that this gen, not sure if we've got confirmation), and compare vs 15th gen Intel once it's out in like September-ish.

Same. I was waiting for Skylake to upgrade but doesn't seem worth it; I'll probably wait for a 2x performance boost on the i5-2500k, which seems to be still a long way off. Although it seems disappointing perhaps I should be grateful I got lucky and chose the right generation last time I upgraded.

I, too, am currently rocking a 9XXX series chip, and currently debating whether I should spring for a 7800x3d or wait a bit and see what the next gen of Ryzen's will offer.

Ryzen when?

Well I hope they release the 5700X soon. I was excited for Zen 3, but their price bump and lack of a middle ground option left me conflicted whether I should shell out more money for a 5800X or get a last gen CPU.

You are very patient. I'm not sure about skipping this generation, because who knows when we will get ECC UDIMMs for AMD cpus. It could be late 22 or or even mid 23.

I'm really looking forward to this. But one issue with current AMD cpu is that you have to buy a desktop GPU even when you are not doing any kind of gaming and such. I know intel iGPU haven't been terribly good but for work they are good enough and is one less part and cheaper to boot. For same performance a Ryzen 3rd gen + gpu might still be cheaper but the price advantage gets reduced.

I haven't really seen that mentioned much I wonder why is that. I do love the potential for Zen2 + 7nm. The 65w of 3700x and the high frequency of the 3900X both suggest interesting potential for the future. One could end up seeing that the Ryzen 5, six cores might have higher overclocking headroom.

Then there's of course Navi, the first new GPU core in a long long time.

If you mean the 3rd gen server chips, they're not released yet.

Also there are diminishing returns as core count increases. I'm doubting that a 5950x is worth it over the 5900x for me.
