Given the long and blemished history of failure, grifts and outright lies coming out of the cryptocurrency community, that is a ridiculous position.

Please stop wasting your time trying to defend cryptocurrency. At this point nothing you say will be believe because cryptocurrency bros have a long history of hype that goes nowhere. If you want to show the world that cryptocurrency is useful, go figure out a way to make it useful that doesn't involve breaking laws or wouldn't be better solved by using a DB instead of the block chain.

There is no defence of anything crypto, blockchain or NFTs.

It is all a scam. Please stop defending this ridiculous nonsense.

Please, stop doing that. You won't get anywhere by saying all other major projects that occupy the same space as Bitcoin are scams. You're not helping bitcoin by doing that. You're not convincing anyone that bitcoin isn't crypto; it's the first crypto, and frankly it's been superseded by other FOSS projects like Monero and Ethereum in various places. Either all of crypto is a scam, or we have to take things on a case-by-case basis. By using this Bitcoin-only logic, you're just turning more people over to the former position. Many of the best innovators in the scene have been working on anything but Bitcoin for a long time.

If you have a counterpoint then by all means make an argument for it, but don't post.. this.

It's always disappointing to see what hacker news devolves into whenever cryptocurrencies are discussed. We should try to hold ourselves to a higher standard than this.

Someone clearly doesn't get the point of decentralized cryptocurrencies. Don't worry, you're in good company (most of mankind.)

Cryptocurrencies are built on a deck of lies and scams. You equivocate about 'fiat' or real dollars being 'the same.' They're not. If you support this drivel, you'll only perpetuate and prolong the pain.

Oh boy, you are not helping the cryptocurrency community with that extremist line of thinking...

The whole point of cryptocurrencies is to scam poor, desperate people, and fuck the planet, for the sake of personal wealth.

Fuck off and die you soulless cretin.

Thanks for accusing me of group think! To turn the tables around, the burden of proof is on crypto to be useful, not on me. Stuff is not useful by default. So, instead of stooping to your insults, let me ask you - what use does it have?

Also, I found you online, you work for crypto, pretty dishonest of you to not disclose that before commenting.

It seems to be official crypto policy that any criticism of crypto, as a technology, community, ideology, or anything is physically impossible.

Come on man. Stop blinding yourself to a scam.

I speak up against cryptocurrency because it's a cancer. It's a hype adding to climate change without any real world use case whatsoever.

I don’t see why crypto skeptics feel the need to regurgitate the same tried and debunked talking points into every single thread about crypto. This unhinged rant might as well be a copypasta at this point. None of this thread is even about bitcoin.

@dang can you do something about this.

I built my startup around one of the few uses of blockchain tech I see that really has utility — timestamping without a trusted source. I'm not anti-crypto, and I own a small amount myself.

That said, all these posts are absolute horseshit. We've had John McAfee anticipating million dollar Bitcoins for the last few years, we've had Novogratz spewing more unsubstantiated price predictions, and now someone writing a blog post is doing the same. Maybe it will happen. Maybe. But there's no point speculating on it like this. I could do the same with nearly any other asset or idea, like virtual reality or artificial intelligence or some other buzzword.

This just fuels FOMO and hype and does little to advance the cause of decentralization and cryptocurrencies.

This is not to mention Bitcoin's biggest problem, which is its distribution. People like Roger Ver and Brock Pierce will not (and probably should not) be the richest people on Earth.

You won't, because then it'll turn out to be nonsense.

This is always how cryptocoin nuts argue.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you don't get into cryptocurrency work to make the world a better place. Or rather, those that do should not be trusted around secure code. /snark

Up front: I hate crypto. I think it is stupid and any use case it has can be solved much more efficiently with existing tools.

To me this blog reads like post-breakup copium. Dude just spent two years of his life and who knows how much money trying to find a market, only to realize there isn’t one. But he is sure someone else will find it! The technology is good!

No it isn’t. And no they won’t. Admit when you are wrong and serve as a lesson to others.

It wasn't supposed to be a defence of crypto. I have no need to defend it and there are plenty of reasonable criticisms of it. I was just trying to explain the kind of unsubstantial attacks on 'crypto' we see frequently (e.g. this post). "You're jealous" may sound childish but that doesn't make it untrue.

You're assuming a level of good faith in crypto bros that frankly doesn't exist. They aren't interested in any criticism of bitcoin and the like, they personally stand to make money from it and you are just their next potential victim.

Your condescending bone-to-pick attitude about people using cryptocurrency is kind of cringe.

Why are you being so rude to people who just want to foster a real conversation with you about cryptocurrency? When you're backed into a corner you can't resort to "it's not for you", and start making personal attacks. It frankly makes your case look paper-thin and further reinforces the idea that cryptocurrency is a chump's game.
