Probably right -- mine was based upon impressions.

In terms of archives, and 20/80, whatever "Alan Watts from the archives" they now offer as a donation premium is probably enough for KPFA's purposes. I don't know when they moved to the new building, except it must have have been since 1990. So possibly "fire, flood" or move between facilities.

Interesting. You've convinced me to re-visit K5 to see what it's like there now.

Yes, that’s the one, thank you!

I did notice in ~2019 that they were no longer in the same building (which appeared empty), guess they just moved somewhere less prominent.

It was the old RAND Santa Monica headquarters, designed by John Williams: http://www.rand.org/pubs/classics/building.html

That particular building was demolished in 2005.

I just checked and you are correct. I guess they probably leveled the old building, which was 3030 Corvin. Anyone that was there in the mid 2000s remembers when Facebook heated the place up and they had box fans every where, an extra generator parked in the parking lot, etc.

I wonder if Philip K. Dick had the old Mission police station in mind? The one near Gus's. Not sure when that one went out of commission.

I am not sure what was special back in the 70's (I only started going int he 80's) but they were in a different building near the zoo back then. When the new building was built they had to pay for it with increased ticket costs.

I haven't been there in several years. I will say that their index of what they had was good and their staff very helpful.

Sounds very rad. I wonder why they closed and what they managed to accomplish?

Wow! I just went to KPH a few months ago. Beautiful surreal place. Looked abandoned from the outside and the doors were locked. Super excited to see this working.

Interesting to see this here, I'm guessing submitted due to it being 90 year anniversary since opening.

I got downvoted for my response asking for clarification, classic HN.

My tenure was more than a decade ago, but the space was on 11th and folsom and has brick walls on the inside. The space next to the corner venue. It has been several different venues since I had it.

The firehouse has been under lock and key (except to those with enough $$) for a really long time now, like maybe more than a decade.

So sad. That place was fantastic. I’m surprised the owner won’t let some nonprofit take over.

The cards received from HAARP are interesting to me in that I was under the notion that the facility had been shut down. I did not realize that the university was still operating it. I don't know why, but that makes me kind of happy.

We had a membership there for a while but found it was too loud to actually work. On the other hand, the events were great and it was a good location to have meeting at.

I just went to it, been a while. It is much different than I thought it was :(

As the comments on that page point out, that was years ago. A lot of stuff has been opened since.

According to Wikipedia the building was built in Pasadena a few blocks away (175 N Las Robles) and not in Temple City. It was moved in 1987. I don’t know if that removes any of the mystery.

That was exactly my thought. Well is there anything left of the old altavista?
