Google seems to be hiding the fact where the phone is made.
I think it's very important to know for a consumer to make an ethical choice.
Where they make it?
I bought my Pixel 4a specifically because it wasn't made in China (Vietnam). I would have considered upgrading to the 6 if it were made somewhere else. I also was considering a Google Titan security key until I learned they were made in China, too.
All I've been able to find on "Google moves pixel manufacturing out of China" is rumors. Rumors they were moving some of them to Vietnam. Rumors that they were moving some to India. But no official notification that they've been moved. No notes on their storefront on where the pixel phones are being manufactured.
The most convincing article I found was an un-sourced piece from "hothardware" (and nothing shouts legitimacy in a source than a name like that) which says that only the budget pixel phones were actually moved to Vietnam, the high end versions are still in China.
As such, I have to assume that their production is still largely occurring in China.
I wouldn't mind being proven wrong though.
As a side note about the strawman accusation; pointing out Google's attempts to re-enter the lucrative Chinese market when the parent is using their absence to justify the position of "Google's Better" is absolutely relevant.
Samsung smartphones shows that assembly in China is no longer required: no Samsung smartphone is made in China anymore. They're mostly made in Vietnam and now India (with some small scale manufacturing in a bunch of protectionist countries like Brazil for domestic demand but not for export)
The age of China being the factory of the world is ending. And that was before Trump's trade war.
Likewise the displays are made in Japan or Korea no matter where the phone is assembled, the RAM is made in Korea or Taiwan or Japan, etc...the same proximity boost that China got when they started with assembly.
Maybe something to do with who manufacturers the panels for each phone? I know one of the devices are now being made in India and rest in China. Can't remember which is where.
