I'd advise against Namecheap (as a former many year customer) as they decided a while back to start taking a political stance as a business; they terminated existing customers, with no notice, because they disagreed with political actions of the customer's home country. Whatever country you live in could so something in the future they don't like and they'll just drop you, can't rely on them to act as a business.
NameCheap has been excellent. Moved over following the wake of the SOPA fiasco. No regrets. In fact, the move should have been sooner. Their service is far the superior.
If they're willing to terminate service for political reasons in this case, who's to say they won't do it in the future for other political reasons? Here begins the slippery slope of Namecheap terminating service to those it deems "wrong".
Been a happy, confident Namecheap user for a long time. Now I'm not so confident.
I'd like to switch away from namecheap as well, but realistically, if the mob comes for you, you're sol I think unless maybe there is a dark web solution.
I use AWS, Microsoft, google, etc, (not to mention Canadian banks) I think all of those are just as likely as namecheap to be subject to political whims. And of you cant pay whichever provider you use, the point is moot anyway. Maybe having redundant providers that are as politically decoupled as possible is a potential hedge?
For anyone that wasn't around, a few years back Namecheap decided without any warning to just instantly drop all their customers from an entire country because of political ideology. I wouldn't trust them at all since they've shown they're more interested in making political statements than running a business. You might be the one they randomly drop next, sending you scrambling.
Hey Ted, I currently use google domains and while I'm pretty happy with that one service I would like to switch away from Google entirely and that is one of the last services of theirs I use. What case can you make for why I should switch to namecheap?
I’m about to switch away from namecheap, been meaning to ever since they cut off a subset of their customers without much warning or recourse. Haven’t gotten around to it yet but I’ve since lost trust and wonder whether that couldn’t happen to me next if I continue using namecheap. So just be careful if your views don’t align with theirs.
i’ve been a namecheap customer for a long time (10+ years). i do not think you are making the right choice. you are punishing the wrong people. you are sending a message that selecting namecheap isn’t just choosing a hosting platform but also a making political alignments. you say you’re doing this because you want nothing to do with the war, but by making this change you are involving yourself even more with the war
I liked Namecheap, but have had major issues with their DNS service. you can't switch off of them without downtime. So don't use their dns, otherwise you are locked in. which is kinda shitty.
