Dunno if I buy that personally. I don't use X/Twitter at all any more (lost interest prior to Elon buying it), and I only see it pop up in links on HN.
Now that Nitter.net has gone away (to see replies on X/Twitter), I don't even bother clicking on the Twitter stories any more.
I deleted twitter around the time Elon's bid got approved. I was thinking about it for a while, as the app is just another way to get pissed off at the world.
These moves seem odd given that Elon isn't even the owner yet and still has some ways to go to get it all done.
I am getting the feeling twitter will be dead in a couple of years. End up like Tumblr or something. It will still be there, but it will have lost it's place in the top 20 social media platforms.
I think Twitter's engagement metrics are falling so Elon is tweeting like a troll in order to try to boost attention to the site/app.
I think the initial wave of engagement from all the attention created by the sale and layoffs are gone. A lot of people realized that Twitter is worse now than before, so they've stopped using it. That's my guess.
I visit Twitter occasionally and all I see are far-right groups, crypto bros and grifters, and some AI is taking over the world tweets here and there.
I don't remember direct links to Twitter being so prevalent until recently. Is it... time to reconsider this? Twitter no longer seems like a reliable source for anything except Elon Musk himself, since he presumably won't suddenly suspend himself, or block links to things he wants to link to.
I can't see many people using it. Even the Donald Trump situation didn't create a viable twitter competitor, and there are a lot more people who are weirdly into Donald than are weirdly into Elon.
Of course it is. People claim Elon never wanted twitter, and that he was interested in trimming it up and selling it. It's my view that now that he has mated it with his beloved x brand, this is just not the case.
I completely quit Twitter in the last month for 3 reasons:
- the « my feed » tab (or whatever it’s called) is filled with Elon’s tweets. Wtf? It’s not like he’s that interesting
- their new logo with the marble effect is cringe, every time I went to open it, I decided not to instead because it’s not attractive to me. The new name is cringe too, and no one seems willing to adopt it
- and finally the last step that made me uninstall it for good is Musk’s recent stances in politics (he’s clearly pro Russian and there’s no way I’ll believe the starlink debacle in Ukraine was not directly linked to Musk and Putin ; now he has a word to say on how European countries manage the migrant crisis). He’s an asshole and I don’t think I can trust anything linked to him, including Twitter, ever again
Seeing these news right after deactivating your Twitter account. :)
Twitter is not a platform any more it used to be, a lot of fake accounts with blue ticks and ads after ads.
I just wonder what was Elon's original idea with Twitter, buy big social network, rename it to "X", show to the world that "Yes, I can", then destroy it gradually from inside?
From the last 90 submissions there seem to be >5% about Elon / Twitter. Why is everybody submissing stuff about that? Why the huge media coverage overall?
Twitter was atrocious to use even before it was bought by Elon Musk. Without e.g. Nitter it was (and still is) even unusable to anybody not signed up and signed in.
I truly hope all the top tier engineers who kept it going leave and it all goes bankrupt and Elon can have his tarnished brand lol. There are multiple other avenues on social media for the same functions as Twitter, maybe a little less conducive but they will do the job.
