Good to see Notes with a lock (fingerprint). It would be great if Apple decided to add fingerprint app locks as a feature for any app that one may want.
Hey Hacker News, I'm excited to share my latest project with you - NoteLock, a minimal and secure note-taking MacOS app that lets you protect your private information with ease. With a simple and intuitive interface, NoteLock makes it easy to create and manage your notes, all while keeping your data safe with industry-standard encryption.
I created NoteLock because I wanted a fast and easy-to-use note-taking app that didn't compromise on security. NoteLock uses AES-256 GCM with SHA256 to encrypt and decrypt your notes, and never collects or transfers any of your data to the cloud.
I'd love to hear your feedback on NoteLock, and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have. Try NoteLock today and experience the simplicity and security you've been looking for.
Try Zoho Notebook. You can lock a notebook which would not encrypt your notes but locks the visibility of your notes. And all your notes sync across your devices. Visit https://zoho.com/notebook for more details.
Sounds interesting. I'd like to jot down important notes from time to time. However, I have a couple of concerns: 1) I'm accustomed to using Apple Notes and 2) What about security? I'm hesitant to trust highly sensitive information to a new app
Unfortunately, the platform lock is a deal breaker for me. After testing a lot of different note apps, I'm currently using Joplin.
It does 95% of the things I need quite right. I'm not sure, if it's only my problem, but I really struggled to find a good app for note taking, although there's a plethora of solutions out there.
The Notes update looks great! I use Notes for shopping lists and also to store passwords/personal info - so the TouchID security feature is nice.
Another native iOS app I use a lot is Reminders - great for appointments and todo reminders (like calling someone back). It would be great to see if that got a bit of an upgrade.
Usually my first and only questions when looking at trying a new note-taking app - have you implemented client-side encryption? How are my notes secured?
Been using Apple Notes for 8 years now and can't imagine using any other tool at this point. Everything else is too complicated and with distracting thrills, or is too barebones. Notes is the perfect balance, and I like that the notes can be totally offline.
The only thing that needs improvement is the search function.
EDIT: Another thing I really like about Notes is how notes can be password protected, which includes full encryption, and they can be unlocked with your fingerprint. If the user doesn't interact with the app for a few minutes, the notes automatically relock themselves. This is great for journaling because I can be confident that the more candid thoughts I express won't be accidentally read by anyone.
Thanks for the feedack! I do agree, notes are extremely personal. We will be updating the security section in the course of this week. We are also experimenting with end-to-end encryption, that most note-taking tools lack.
I came to the comments to find some insight about the format it stores notes on, so thanks.
That's a big advantage for me as usually the issue I had with other note taking apps in the past is how hard they lock you in, particularly after years of using them.
